I was pretty young for the end of those unis but is that how people remember them?

Yeah, pretty much remember at least in the 70s the batting helmets were just red, whatever the unis.

Now, by the time of Schmidt's 500th, they were definitely more of a similar maroon color.

I guess it depends on what era they're focusing on.

From what I understood, the color was always maroon but it faded easily and started to look red later in the year

I would definitely have to see the scientific studies on that.

Not too many people remember these, when the Phillies were scuffling and major sponsor WB Mason could pretty much dictate anything about the ballpark experience. Discontinued when Desi Relaford accidentally stapled himself to third while trying to stretch a double. Out on the play.

I think the color of the Phillies helmets of the 1970-1991 era varied a bit - indeed I once found an article in the Inky from 91 or 92 when they were switching to the current style wherein Bill Giles cited the difficulty in being able to find that maroon shade they used consistently across suppliers and materials as one reason for the change - but I also think the issue is photo color processing of the era. Certainly if you see good footage of the 1980 NLCS and World Series the helmets are unquestionably the dark shade of maroon, so by 1980 at the latest they were dark like the ones they use now.

Big Papi was apparently shot.....

Hospitalized. I think he’s in the Dominican

Hopefully he’s ok, sounds like a robbery attempt there, not a good run for that country

Sounds like he got shot in the leg, looks like others beat the shit out of the guy who shot him before the police came

Hope Papi is ok.

Came here to post this thought:

I don’t know how it’s possible, but Hank Aaron is underrated.

It is sorta crazy that the former HR king, and still all time leader in RBI and TB only won the MVP once. Had six 3rd place finishes

A testament to his consistency and longevity

Also third all-time in hits after Rose and Cobb.

The thing about him is that he didn’t have a single run of breathtaking dominance like some other greats. He was just really, really, really good, and sometimes dominant, for fucking ever. As just one example, he had 5 season with an OPS of 1.000 or better. Many Hall of Famers had that many or more, bunched together. His first such season was in 1959, and his last was in 1973. From 1955-1973, 19 seasons, he had an OPS of .900 or better 17 times, missing only in 1966 and 1968, his age 32 and 34 seasons. In 1968 he perhaps appeared to be “fading” with an .852 OPS. He then posted 1.003, .958, 1.079, .904, and 1.045 from his age 35-39 seasons, averaging 137 games played per season and 564 PAs. Without performance enhancers.

During those seasons, he recorded 203 home runs, 392 walks - and 274 strike outs.

Take away all his homers and he’s still got over 3000 hits

Five teams (Baltimore, Kansas City, Toronto, Miami, Detroit) are on pace to lose 100+ games this season, and a sixth (Seattle) will get there if they keep tanking

Why does it seem that the whole baseball world is just now figuring out (in the last 5 years or less) that catcher framing is a thing that matters? I feel like if you ever watched baseball before this was obvious.

It's definitely always been a scouty thing but I think the motion tracking finally became good enough where they could quantify it.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

Probably a lot easier to track now?
