Yes, they did. Trade made no sense from the Pirates' perspective when it happened. Looks even worse now.

Archer is one of the most overrated pitchers in the game. He seems like a great guy with an effervescent personality but that doesn’t throw strikes. All sorts of people rave about his stuff and potential. However when it comes to living up to it, he falls on his face. When he was with the Rays, his losses were shoved aside with the excuse that he was just on a poor club. Unfortunately now he doesn’t have that excuse but the results are the same.

I thought it was a good trade at the time, but that was because Glasnow was slow and inaccurate to the plate. His 2017 xFIP was 5.64, with a worse ERA and FIP. He was a bad pitcher with potential, and the Rays have done well in turning him around. Austin Meadows had over 600 ABs of average offensive production spread across 3 seasons. I think we forget how much those 2 guys were shaded toward potential, versus production.

Archer has been prone to HRs, but otherwise been valuable. His extended time in the AL East didnt help his numbers, so I've been genuinely surprised at how poorly he's done in Pittsburgh. Good trade for the Rays, obviously, but a lot of credit goes to their scouting/analytics groups for identifying players who could be improved.

This fangraphs piece written at the time came down pretty neutral, which is where I was. https://blogs.fangraphs.com/the-pirates ... gest-move/

Yelich's home/road splits are absolutely bananas. Think they mentioned it on the radio yesterday:

Home .396 avg .515 obp 1.226 slg with 14 HR and 31 RBI in 68 plate appearances
Road .296 avg .377 obp .389 slg with 1 HR and 5 RBI in 61 plate appearances

Just two doubles both home and road

edit: Oh, 6 stolen bases and 0 caught stealing on the road vs no attempts at home, but that's probably because in 2/3rd of his hits at home he's rounding the bases

Keuchel update

He's hanging out in Cali, throwing 90+ pitches every 5th day like any other starter. Says he's fine with waiting to sign until after the draft pick compensation ends.

“If you would’ve asked me on the first day of free agency, I would have said no way I’d be here on May 6. This was not the plan at all. I would love to be out there playing ball and helping a team win. Because, to my career at this point, I’ve done more winning than I have losing and at a much higher clip. So what team wouldn’t want me to be out there? Am I the best at this point in time? No. But am I more than or better than some of the offers I’ve been given? Absolutely. That’s not me being greedy. That’s just my compensation in the market from what the analytical data is telling me. I didn’t come up with this. The front offices came up with this. So now they’re trying to tell me I’m less than what the analytical data is saying. How is that possible?”
.
.
“I lead the ship. Scott [Boras] will give me information in general. He gives me necessary information for me to make a knowledgeable decision on my future. … And if it were up to him I would probably be signed at this point. He wants me out there throwing, pitching, and putting up stats that are quality major league stats. I told him no on numerous deals because it’s about principle. It’s about fair market value. And I wasn’t getting that.

“When people tweet at me, saying, ‘Hey, quit being the Le’Veon Bell of baseball,’ it is a funny line. But he stood up for himself. He stood up for his well-being. And I’m standing up for my well-being as well. It’s about principle in both situations. Now, I’m not looking to sit out this whole year. I wasn’t looking to sit out at all. But we are in this situation right now. I would love to sign tomorrow. I would love to sign right now. Or, I might have to wait until this draft pick comes off me. Whatever happens, happens. I’m not going to dwell on it. I’m going to be ready to go. That’s me right now.”
.
.
“It’s not just the front offices who have all these numbers. Players and agencies now have the access and the knowledge to do the same thing. My asking price and my due diligence is not just out of left field. It has come to me through my own career path, my own career numbers, and then what my market is valued at this point in time. To this point it hasn’t been matched. It’s been less than what it should be. And this is out of principle, what’s going on right now. I can’t speak for other players. It’s a principle for me. I’m not asking for the world.”
.
.
“Why succumb to teams that think you’re needy and you’re willing to accept a lesser offer than your market value? It’s all relative. If you’re at work and you’re killing your job, nine to five every day, and you get another offer that’s less, why would you accept that offer? This is not a me thing. This is for the greater good of baseball. This is for principle.”

Cubs probing apparent racist gesture by fan

The Chicago Cubs said they are investigating a fan using what appeared to be a racist hand gesture that was caught by cameras during Tuesday night's broadcast of a home game against the Miami Marlins at Wrigley Field.

Wondering what in the world a racist hand gesture looks like, I looked up the incident:

That's a new one on me. I remember years ago that was just some stupid “Made you look!” game that we played in high school, where if you got someone to look at that hand gesture while holding it below the waist you got to punch that person in the arm.
How dare you interrupt my Lime Rickey!

That's weird. Looked into it a bit, according to reddit it's one of those pepe the frog things in the last few years where 4chan people wanted to make a joke that the media will report that everything is racist, so they started putting the circle game thing in white supremacy memes, then the media picked up on it/white supremacists started using it as a symbol.

So the guy was either making a dumb balls joke or he's doing a white power symbol behind a black guy on national TV. The world in 2019.
Two days later I get a text back that says I'm a basketball player and a businessman, not a Thundercat.

Blow it up and start over.

Joey Gallo has done it. First player in MLB history with 100 HR before 100 singles. He has 93 career singles.

Some run differential talk in the other thread and I came across some weird ones.

Reds are +21 but 6 games under .500 and dead last in the Central.

Pirates are -28 but 1 game over .500

REPORT SO FAR:

Went to Wrigley last night. Looking to go to Guaranteed Rate Field on Tuesday. I'd call "Guaranteed Rate Field" Comiskey, only arguably the only thing worse than naming a ballpark after some dumb corporation is naming it after one Charles A. Comiskey.

Kinda late on this, but most of the things in that article about Comiskey are probably not true. It turns out that most of what is written in Eight Men Out, both about him and the scandal in general is made up.
