thats not the same as praying for altherr and quinn to take their jobs. i believe that aa and q can do that by playing their healthy best even if odubel and nick are no worse than last year.

I don't think Quinn's ceiling at this point is anything more than a 4th OF, likely a 5th OF type, but God bless if you have those sorts of expectations for him

Keith Law said the Phillies rebuild is in its "early stages."

I mean he obviously ain't been hanging around here but even so I think that's wildly off the mark for a paid baseball writer.

think its fair to say. its just perspective and what you're definition is. I'd consider the sixers to still be rebuilding. Once they make the playoffs this season they're done. Phils still have a long way to go to be a to be a playoff contender in my eyes.

I think he probably means the actual building process on the MLB level, not the bottoming out and sucking part.

Thats what he should mean, anyway.

I'd be pretty surprised if we don't make the playoffs in 2019 and shocked if we don't make it by 2020.

Think Law is pretty spot on. This shit won't kick into high gear until next off season.

I'm more with the conservative projections crowd. Until I see some of these "younger guys" get on base and have productive at-bats for a full season, I still don't really know who we are, or what we have? Is there even one emerging star player at the plate. And any really goods we can rely on for a few years?

That said, they aren't doing "the process" and that's refreshing.

I've been wondering if Texas would ever want to send back Cole and if they'd under-write some of it too?

I don't know if it will ever happen but sure would be fun to see Trout as a Phillies. Hometown boy n all.

Late to the party but I’ve got broad shoulders.

Great game of poker by Klentak and very well crafted deal.

54 years ago the Phils acquired a star pitcher after his age 31 season. He had been a 5-time all star and had led the league in strikeouts twice. But he was coming off 2 years of decline, his ERA+ going from 129 to 114 to 97 over the '61-'63 seasons, he was on the wrong side of 30 and most considered him past his prime and on an inexorable trend downward.

He went on to have 4 terrific seasons for the Phils posting an ERA+ of 132, 132, 150 and 149 over those 4 seasons. He ended solidifying and leading a Phillies starting staff which, at the time of his acquisition, had only 1 reliable homegrown starter. He eventually ended up in the HOF nd his name was Jim Bunning.

That's my comp and I'm sticking with it.

Another comparable guy is Verlander. He looked like he was declining at 31 when he had a 4.54 ERA and a his K/9 was down to 6.9, but he bounced back and has had 3 great years.

Not really stat wise or stature wise, but jake reminds me of when the phillies acquired Roy oswalt. Doesn't quite have the same stuff, but knows how to pitch and will give you a very good six innings with a lot of effort to do so. In an earlier post, I said he's no longer an ace, but more of #2 and will slowly decline a bit over the following two years to a 3 and 4, until he ultimately implodes.

Personally, I like the Bunning comp better for more selfish reasons. If the phillies were a small market team, I would've passed due to both timing and risk. The phillies are not, so I'm happy the deal went down, even with my more pessimistic projection.
