Phillies Sign 1B Carlos Santana

I don't really care. I like the move assuming Hoskins stays in LF and we move Nick or Altherr for something nice.
I couldn't care less about the money. This team has paid nobody for 3 years it seems. They got a 50 million windfall yesterday and He'll be off the books in 3 years, 4 tops.
Losing a second round pick hurts but after taking Kingery in the 2nd, Almaraz has taken Gowdy in 2016 who has pitched all of 12 innings in 2 years and a guy who would have been there at least one round later (howard) in 2017.

Then who plays 2B?

Santana has put up Abreu-esque consistent numbers for 7 straight years.

Losing a 2nd round pick and blocking our best player's position isn't great for a 32 year old declining player.

i know hoskins was gamebusters for a month but he's our best player? i think i need to see more before i say that and i'm a rhys-lover.

He doesn't have much competition. I guess at this point he has the highest ceiling of guys we have seen.

If he can get another young arm for Cesar he may have enough to get Machado: De Los Santos, another young arm, Franco or Crawford and Altherr or Williams.

Gotta assume they hold Kingery back a month for service time.

They obviously think they can make the playoffs this year. They signed two high-end relievers and one of the best bats on the market

I guess you're right. We probably should all be happy that in April we'll have a team trying to make the playoffs.

The Phillies also forfeit $500,000 in International Allocation Money (in next year I think).

Law had him as his #5 free agent:

"I think the biggest surprise with Santana is that he has turned into a competent first baseman. A catcher for the first three years of his MLB career, Santana hasn't logged an inning behind the plate since 2014, but he has turned out to be more than just playable at first. That matters in a market saturated with designated hitters and guys who should move to DH.

Santana has been very consistent at the plate over his career, walking often and striking out at about the same rate (even as league strikeout rates have risen, his has dropped), and hitting for modest power. He's had an OBP between .357 and .377 for six straight seasons. He played in 143 games in 2012, and has played in 152 or more in every year since, hitting at least 19 homers in each of the past five seasons. The knock on Santana is that he doesn't make a ton of hard contact, so it's not as if you can project a power surge or sudden spike in his average. I do think he'll hold the value he has for a while, so a four-year, $60 million deal would be reasonable, maybe a little low in light of his consistency and durability."

Crawford with Manny at ss and Franco at 3rd.

Could be Odubel and not Williams or Altherr that gets traded, also.

Kapler had said that he likes guys to play multiple positions. Sounds like Matt likes that, too.

Which is the exact amount they acquired in the Rule 5 trade they made yesterday. Everything is fitting together, they are clearly going to acquire Machado and contend for the playoffs in 2018. That lineup will have plenty of pop and should be one of the best in baseball.

There better be another part to this because I don't love the idea of Rhys being locked into LF

There is 100% another part, whether it's acquiring Machado or a Gerrit Cole/Greinke/Archer type

Not sure what another part could be other than a DH coming to the National League.
