It was a lot of hateful shit and he didn’t really deny he doesn’t feel the same way today.

I'm sure people here who actually pay attention to baseball have been all over this, but scrolling through the standings this evening the Mariners are 20 games over .500 and have a run differential of zero.

That seems...impossible?

I grew up in the poconos, with one black kid in my class, and anyone who was gay kept it a secret. Homophobia and racism were just the norm. You'd be putting yourself at odds with the community if you weren't a homophobe and a racist. It wasn't until I moved to Rehoboth that I learned that gay people were just people, and it took until I moved to Savannah before I could see the difference between good and shitty black people the same way I could see the difference between good and shitty white people. I certainly uttered racist and homophobic slurs when I was in high school, because I didn't want to be ostracized. I wasn't an athlete, either, so I didn't have that sweaty hotbox to try and maneuver. If I had had twitter, I'm sure I'd have made an ass of myself.
Dude's in the right spot, where he seems contrite, and is taking sensitivity training. His comments were abhorrent, but he seems like he's aware of that. Obviously he's much younger than me, so he should have been enlightened at a much younger age, but I understand how it can be when you grow up knowing only racism and homophobia. If you're not a piece of shit, you'll realize how wrong that is.
It's interesting to look back to the 80's, when AIDS was still completely misunderstood, and see how real homophobia was. People feared for their lives, as well as their position in society. I'm so pleased with how far we've come, and so optimistic for the future. Let this be a teaching point, and let's hope someone learns something from this. If the guy turns out to actually be a piece of shit, then fuck him. But hopefully we have one fewer asshole than we started with.

A 1.50 ERA and 16 k/9 will win over a lot of hearts and minds.

Antonio Bastardo suspended for 140 games for second violation of drug policy although it's unclear to me who he was suspended from or when he was tested, since he was released by the Diamondbacks in spring training and has been a free agent ever since.

More of a general random thought, but there's baseball in it. Haven't thought of this song in a long time. Saw them perform when I lived in Baltimore as an opening act for somebody-like to think it was when I saw Clarence Clemons, but that seems unlikely.

We're nearly 100 games into the season and only 4 teams in the NL are under .500

-- Seattle has 60 wins and a +1 run differential

-- Oakland at 57-43 is in 3rd place, 8 games out in the West and would miss the playoffs, but if they were in the NL they'd be the 2nd-best team

One thing I don't understand about buying tickets for MLB is why refunds can't be given on baseball games that are rained out. I may be going to Boston and would like to see a Red Sox game, but only have one night to see a game. If they get rained out, why won't they refund the ticket? I'm not coming back to Boston for a baseball game. Even if it was rescheduled for the next day, it might clash with my plans, or I might not be there anymore.

Any other "tickets" industry, airline, concerts, etc, if the ticketed "event" is changed, postponed, or cancelled due to weather (or really anything), they generally give (and are usually required to give) you a refund. Why doesn't MLB do this? It seems remarkably hostile to the consumer, and if you're more hostile to the consumer than the airline industry- that's really saying something.

This thread needs less baseball and more Kate Upton.

This call from C.B. Bucknor is getting a lot of attention today. He missed the call but honestly it's not outrageous, I've certainly seen a lot of worse calls. On one quick glance it looks like it could have got the corner, that might be an affect of the camera angle though, granted. That is, I know it was in reality a ball, but at least based on the video it's not like it was some awful miss.
