I'm speculating that Hinkie's line of thought is:
1) there is no home run hire sitting out there, especially for a rebuild job
2) he has a very clear idea about how he wants to build a roster, what types of players he wants to target, and how their respective skill sets fit together, and
3) given 1) and 2), he wants to go through the draft, make his 3 top 45 picks, and then go find a coach who can credibly sell that he is all in with the roster pieces/overall philosophy, vs a guy who is going to see a rookie GM and want serious draft pick input

I think this is all plausible and reasonable but is this SOP? Does anyone know if this is common/uncommon practice to go into either the draft or the summer league without a head coach? Any recent examples? I'm just curious.
