The Crimson Cyclone wrote:what makes Trump dangerous to the GOP down ballot is not that people will come out and vote Hillary and then maybe pull the D lever on the rest if they were undecided.

It's that he may cause people to abstain out of protest and not vote at all, including many people who traditionally vote republican. I'm sure some will come and split the ticket but t won't take much in some districts for him to have an effect on house and senate GOP candidates

on the flip side, if Trump goes full on war with the republicans after being shunned this week, which there is a distinct possibility, you may see staunch Trumpies come out and vote Trump and ignore down ballot GOP competely

The other danger is that in future elections, all these Republicans can be tied to Trump on negative advertising. That might thin out the bench a bunch, basically counteracting the Dems not building or developing a bench for the past 10 years (partly because there aren't a lot of places a Dem can get elected due to gerrymandering).

@costareports
In calls this morning, many Rs privately want to defect from Trump. But they say the debate gave them pause since he roused their base.

trump is the exact candidate the republican base has been waiting for

The Rs on my timeline loved the 'you'd be in jail' line most of all.

lmao kellyanne on cbs this morning sending paul ryan a message:

“I certainly hope Speaker Ryan keeps his word and his endorsement of Donald Trump,” Kellyanne Conway said on “CBS This Morning” -- an aspiration she delivered with a veiled threat.

“Speaker Ryan, of course, took to the stage in Wisconsin in his event and faced some boos from the crowd because those who were [there] expected to see Donald Trump," Conway added. "But we’re happy the speaker of the House has endorsed the nominee Donald Trump.”

Meanwhile, Trump circle gloating. Privately mocking elected Rs who are agonizing. One laughed and said, "We don't care."

The Republicans are such a mess. And it's too late now. They're stuck with him and all the chaos he brings.
