I sort of get what you're saying here but I don't think sarcastic necessarily equals only saying the opposite of what's expected. Now those people who just go outside and say 'oh at least its not hot!' and think that it's the funniest thing ever; they can get bent.

I know what you are getting at, but I wouldn't formulate it this way per se.

I've found that it's the people who are cynical, who themselves have an ulterior motive for everything they do, and when regarding others either assume that others are equally duplicitous in their motives OR read the absence of such duplicity on the part of another person as dullness in that person - these people tend to think they are smarter than everyone else, but are in fact using their cynicism as a replacement for genuine intelligence.

When I put it more succinctly:

Cynicism is not the same thing as intelligence, or wisdom.

(But dumb people think it is).
