why wouldn't you just use AutoCAD to do it?

His real name is Calvin, and that would have been too confusing.

I don't have a license for my home PC, plus I want to learn something.

I'm also considering trying to learn Blender for the possibility of making custom game asset mods and also just to play around in.

ah. i have desktop for my main machine. but work also has given me a laptop as well for when i head to vendors/plant sites. so i can just grab my work laptop and use that to design up whatever i need.

Some people call it scatsup

That's about the same as me. I also gave FreeCAD a spin, which seemed pretty descent.

My thinking is if I use another cad program similar to autocad I'll either be mad that it doesn't behave exactly like the nearly 20 years of AutoCAD practice I've had trained me to expect or I'll be really pissed at AutoCAD not doing something bleeding obvious that the free clone does. So at least with sketchup the basic engine necessitates an entirely different workflow than I'm used to.

And I realize after checking the link that it seems to behave a whole lot more like Inventor

it was recently pointed out to me that my habit of grabbing the maitr'd mic and saying "christ, party of 13" is incorrect, as it should be party of 26, since they only sat on one side of the table.
