Yesterday I was invited to a prayer meeting to pray for Marco Rubio. I didn't have the heart to tell her I'm both a Democrat and a Jew.

Great ad.

You would think that Der Fuhrious would get no support from:
* Women
* Nonwhites
* White males with IQ > 65
* LGTB
* LSMSFT

I want to stop being fearful of Ill Douche getting the nomination - Hillary should get 80% of the popular vote. But that would be overestimating the intelligence of voters.

Great ad, but seems a tad hypocritical coming from a conservative PAC.

I know we joke around here a lot but I'm being very serious when I say this: no candidate for President has ever made me feel as uneasy as I feel currently about Trump.

And it's legit fear and concern.

But I think it's important to understand, it's not a fear of him winning the general election and becoming the next President. It's a fear of the sort of hate movement that he has started and how it will all play out in the coming months. In a general election, it will get ugly.

My hope is the Republicans bite the bullet at their convention and tell him to fuck off.

I think the more palpable sense of fear for me isn't the movement he started, but what he awakened. A relatively silent group of fearful, bigoted people who see their place in America as white working-class (with more emphasis on the white) people shrinking and not going quietly with it.

I have a friend at work who once pointed out to me the phenomenon of what he called "the things white people will say when they think they are alone." I work in a relatively progressive setting around people who - mostly - are reliable Democratic voters (perhaps a bit more than they used to be, as many of them even with conservative impulses hate Chris Christie, and I work mostly in NJ), and even within this left-leaning environment, there can be a breathtaking casual racism that gets expressed. I have certainly had people who ought to know better make racist comments to me expecting my assent or approval when they thought we were "alone" - that is, two or more white people who can speak frankly. A lot of this is generational - I have written elsewhere of the "sneaky" racism of baby boomers in particular (that is, expressed racism from people who otherwise espouse progressive ideas and identify as left-to-liberal).

All of this is to say that I don't regard anything about the rise of Trump and his type of supporter as having been previously "hidden" in any meaningful way, or that those people were "silent." If you chose to look and listen, it was there to see. Granted, Trump has driven this sort of rhetoric in some from whispered at the margins to more loudly declaimed at the center of the political universe - but there were many places before Trump ever happened that might be described as semi-marginal which could never have been regarded as "quiet" (conservative talk radio, anyone?).

I have been and have expressed ambivalence about a potential Trump presidency in the past, insofar as I see a significant gap between his rhetoric and his likely course of actions, as compared to someone like Ted Cruz, who I believe - and continue to believe - intends very much on implementing what he says he will do.

I must confess that this weekend has made me rethink this position. Cruz is scary, yes, but the display put on by Trump and Trump supporters crossed a line starting Friday night, and I am now genuinely concerned about the consequences of openly pandering to the subset of the electorate most intensely in favor of the Donald. It feels more and more like a stone that, once started rolling, will be difficult to stop. I still think Trump as more buffoon than successful demagogue, but what is around him is genuinely frightening and must not be permitted any sort of legitimizing.

The question remains of what to do with all of this energy now that it is unleashed. Best case scenario is that it is redirected toward a constructive, internationalist workers' movement. How? When? These are harder questions to answer.

Agreed. Although I'm generally not too sanguine about the human race in general, I believed that we had reached the point in Western, civilized countries where traits such as bigotry and racism -- although they still existed and might even be widespread -- were at least no longer considered fashionable. Clearly I was wrong.

Collier County where I'm now living is very red, but its demographics (at least seasonally) include well-educated and very prosperous people. According to Wikipedia: "Naples is one of the wealthiest cities in the United States, with the sixth highest per capita income in America, and the second highest proportion of millionaires per capita in the US." I've got many Republican friends down here and I've been curious to get their take on Trump in the hopes that any intelligent, decent person would reject his candidacy out of hand. So I've taken to asking my friends about their views on Trump.

Unfortunately I have to report that I've yet to find a Republican who won't vote for him, if nominated. Admittedly we're only talking about a handful of people, but these are good, decent, highly intelligent people who (at least to your face) would denounce bigotry, racism and hate speech. But, for example, the most recent friend I asked told me that Trump was a very successful person who will hire the best advisors and is the kind of person "who will shake things up in Washington." Only when I pressed him a bit did he admit that he would prefer that Trump "tone it down a little."

The fact is that, despite what the establishment bigwigs may say or believe, my firm conviction is that that Republicans of all demographics will vote for Trump, if nominated. Worse yet for Democrats (and for the country, I would argue) based on what I've seen and heard, any Republican tempted to vote against Trump or not vote at all is being driven into Trump's arms by unmitigated hate for Hillary. As much as Hillary is unquestionably experienced and qualified her past misadventures -- real or imagined -- will prevent her from successfully claiming the moral high ground amongst Republicans and even amongst many Democrats. There's no longer any question in my mind that Bernie Sanders would be a better candidate to run against Trump because, whatever your views on Bernie, he is a principled, scrupulous and honest man with as unimpeachable a record as possible for someone who has spent a lifetime in politics.

Not that hard. Just a hunch, but I'm hunching that drumpf supporters, like drumpf, will rarely be the job candidates at the top of your pick list. They're not much interested in jobs, or labor issues, or goals, actually working much - they want what they're 'entitled to'.

....true - and that is their common ground with Bernie's supporters.

each kind is angry that the world doesn't align to their personal needs, and seeks a hero to fix it

Whether it's ThrowOutBrownPeople or FreeCollegeAndEverything, these people seek a simple fix to a complex world

I don't align much with Hillary, issue by issue, but she is God and Einstein compared to the simpleton thinking of Bernie and Drumpf supporters.

This video is from a PAC almost entirely funded by Marlene Ricketts, owner of the Cubs and a huge Scott Walker supporter, FWIW.
