Super Cruzday and the Sandersnistas: Politics

I'm really amazed that there are people who live in Vegas supporting Ted Cruz. Everyone there makes their livelihood off of debauchery, yet there are a bunch of hypocritical evangelists. Makes no sense. You work in an industry supporting numerous supposed "sins". You work at the hypothetical table that Jesus flipped over.

Caucuses generally are.

It's hard to beat democrats in Iowa putting people in various corners and flipping quarters, but this is better. Bet they duel to decide ties.

Nah. One just punches the other in the face.

Btw, do Trump's security guards wear brown shirts?

From a history geek pov, I hope it's Bernie v Donald. Just to wonder what historians would write about this election 100 years from now.

The Republican Party is playing Russian roulette with a three chambered revolver and two of the chambers are loaded. It is breathtaking to watch.

Jeb is understandably peeved at Rubio (though I am not sure he is publicly admitting it) and cannot abide the other two plausible nominees.

Jeb should pull a reverse Reagan, say he didn't leave the Republican Party, the Republican Party left him, and endorse Hillary.

Probably the biggest help he could be to the Republicans at this point.

Nate Silver ‏@NateSilver538 Feb 21
FWIW, Trump's best states according to Morning Consult polling:
New Jersey 51%
Massachusetts 48%
Nevada 48%
Mississippi 47%
(Nat'l Avg: 36%)

I was hoping for a 40-30-20-6-4 type thing tonight due to low caucus turnout, but Nevada has been one of Trump's very best states. If he ends up around 45%, it's not far off from where expectations would be if he's in the 33-35% range nationally. There's been a ton of 3/1 and later polling showing Trump stuck in the low 30s or worse in various states. There's plenty of reason to believe he can be beaten. But between the lack of appetite for GOP donors to take him on directly, and lack of urgency among the field for defeating him - Cruz and Kasich have already released statements tonight crowing about Rubio not winning - I really don't know what the hell is going on. Kasich's camp, who is at 4% of the vote, is crowing that Rubio donors are throwing good money after bad. There are no words strong enough for the condemnation Kasich deserves for what he's doing right now.

Anyhow, if the debate goes well Thursday I remain optimistic that Rubio will finish ahead of Cruz in most of the Super Tuesday states (which are heavily tilted in Cruz's favor geography wise) and ahead of Kasich in all of them (or nearly all of them), and Trump will be limited to something in the neighborhood of 40% of the delegates awarded next Tuesday. If at that point Cruz and Kasich maybe read the writing on the wall, I think Rubio would become a solid favorite. But the lack of urgency to watching this trainwreck unfold seems like it might continue in some quarters, while others seem ready to do something even dumber and surrender to Trump before there's even been a fight. I think Rubio is still probably about 50% - things have gone well for him since my long post, but Trump is closing in on 50% as well. The other paths are rapidly vanishing.

It seems certain that it'll flip back once more of Clark and Washoe come in, but right now Cruz has actually passed Rubio for 2nd.

I'm leaning towards Rubio being the political-equivalent of a toolshed and that there's a pretty good chance he still loses a one-on-one contest against Trump. Rubio's won 7 counties so far, and four of them were with less than 30% of the vote. He literally won zero counties in Nevada and zero TOWNS in New Hampshire (hell, even Bush won a town).

So that ceiling of 35 percent. Definitely want to hear more about that.

Kasich and Carson seemed destined to ride out Super Tuesday, too. It's happening.
