strengthening my ankle? kept off it for a few months, one leg is bigger than the other now. i dont know but i think i need to do is strengthen the calf and shin for support to increase bending or flexibility at the point where the top of the ankle meets leg.

Did you do any PT whatsoever? There are a number of great exercises for this. One is to place a few tennis balls or other objects in a circle around you. stand on the weakened ankle only, bend down, pick one object up, stand up, crouch down, and put it down again. do this going all the way around the circle

no i did nothing formal, my own stretches. just resumed normal activity which was the problem. all that stuff puts some stress on the ankle because i am striking down with my weight. that exercise sounds good. anything stationary should be good you think? should i do any kind of real bending beyond normal technique

How weak are we talking? Can you raise your toes towards your shin and get your ankle past neutral?

Try going up on your tiptoes on one foot, how many times can you do that?

I like this.

Are we talking the whole leg is bigger, like your quads are noticeably smaller too?

not as weak anymore. yes i can do that, but it feels like a real workout, so thats a good sign i think? i tried a bunch of tiptoes, but it's a struggle and i'm imbalanced.

also, just the lower leg is smaller, probably the quad too but i cant tell

We did the fartlek training when I was in high school. It was cutting edge at the time but it's still good training.

So, your calf is pretty weak. Try ankle alphabets to get started and see how sore they make you: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7iueNeAkAFo

If you have any access to a theraband, that could come in handy. Also, as a step before Dude's suggestion, try some single leg balance stuff - static at first. See how sore that makes you.

PM me if you want to talk some more.
