Honestly, renting isn't the worst thing in the world, especially if you have flexibility. When we moved to Delaware back in '09 we had to rent while we dealt with our house in jersey and it was the best thing we could have done. We wound up hating the first place we lived in and got out after 11 months, then we moved to another place, which was a better fit for us and would have basically been the most we could have afforded. Then over the next few years we had another kid, I started making a lot more money and advanced my career to the point where I had a lot more clarity into my and our future plans, we realized what we wanted, like actually WANTED out of life as far as where we lived and the community we wanted to be a part of so when we decided we wanted to buy we could zero in on specific situations that we wanted. The biggest downside of renting is the whole not building equity thing, but in this economic environment, anything you buy right now is not appreciating, re values have been flat and that is really your best opportunity to build equity quickly, when you get a 30 year mortgage your first few years of payments are primarily interest anyway so if you do turn around and sell it, you'll basically be at a break even after re settlement costs for the first few years.
Tl;dr - renting isn't a bad thing, don't rush into buying, wait until you can buy something that you plan on owning for the next ten years and can see meeting the needs of you and your family (and any future additions) for that time.
