the law covering medical expenses for first responders (Zadroga Act) expired because Congress simply didn't bring the bill up for a vote.

Passing a permanent reauthorization of the Zadroga Act would put to rest the question of whether “never forget 9/11” is just a slogan on a bumper sticker or a sacred commitment by public servants to those who risked so much and lost so much that day. If Congress fails to act, that question will answer itself.

the bill isn't partisan so why the hell aren't they bringing it up to vote?

there's currently still funding there; this would've extended it permanently so this doesn't happen again. so, they'll run out of funds in a few months, most likely. it's not IMMEDIATE so no one bothered. this will affect 70,000 people who have terrible health and will eventually die much younger than you and i.

something else:

House Republicans have been supportive of the program but have opposed its permanent extension because they say they want the chance to periodically review it and make sure it is operating soundly. The Senate has not moved a bill.

they want to operate outside the bureaucracy checks, i guess.

You need an ID to vote in Alabama so they're going to close DMVs in mostly Black Belt counties. They also have over 100 vacant positions. Fees were raised across the board. edit: Don't worry, they have a van!

they're also closing 5 state parks because they're losing money. because parks are supposed to make money.

This is because they wanted to save 4 million dollars in the general fund. because fuck direct services to the people and recreation.

I am eagerly awaiting the report on cost to prepare for an orderly shutdown plus the lost effort on tasks that will now create overruns on programs directly attributable to congressional circus acts. That was last year (happy federal new year everybody), so in December the encore will be an FY'16 speed bump.

Can they make it up with furloughs? The federal employees have always gotten paid the back pay, so it is the contractor cost saved, then again the contractors have wised up and are planning some of this into their overhead costs (employees still need to take vacation for the most part - or get access to their training fund budget).

Some very liberal opinions in that article like "hey maybe we should listen to scientific consensus" and "actually, it doesnt make a lot of sense logistically to build the XL line right now".

what a pussy:

The looks we've gotten into Hillary Clinton's emails so far have generally been more comedic than revelatory about her inner thoughts. But one released in the most recent batch is rather more enlightening — showing her instinctive, defensive fear of criticism from the right on social issues:

Clinton's email comes in response to this 2011 Washington Post report that the State Department would no longer ask people to list their "mother" and "father" on passport application forms — and instead would only ask about "parent one" and "parent two." The change, the Post reported, came at the behest of gay rights groups that had been pushing for it for years.

But Clinton was blindsided by the report — and her response was furious. "I'm not defending that decision, which I disagree w and knew nothing about, in front of this Congress," she wrote. "We need to address this today or we will be facing a huge Fox-generated media storm led by Palin et al."

It was addressed. The Associated Press's Matthew Lee reported the next day that Clinton "had ordered" the State Department to amend the change so that it would no longer ditch "mother" and "father" entirely. Instead, the forms would ask for "mother or parent 1" and "father or parent 2."

This fits with what Clinton wrote in the email: "I could live w letting people in nontraditional families choose another descriptor so long as we retained the presumption of mother and father."

Vatican disavowing that the pope requested the meeting with Kim Davis, stated that they were "disappointed" the meeting (which was set up through a Bishop he was scheduled to meet) overshadowed the trip to the US

what i dont get is she's not even Catholic; why would a bishop set up the meeting? i know the Pope will meet with anyone, that's his job, but bishops usually are a little more specific.

Solid speculation that it was Archbishop Carlo Vigano who set it up (the bishop appointed to be the US liason by the former pope) He is a extremely conservative bishop and has met Davis' lawyers at a rally.

this article came out yesterday prior to the statement by the vatican, so it appears they were pretty spot on with their speculation
