Well, thanks to my recent vantage point at the end of the RF stands, looking across to the end of the 1B side stands, I finally figured it out. Turns out it's really simple.
Basically it's just building many, many sets of stairs, with construction identical to how you'd build stairs in your home. There's a set of 'stringers' on each side, but probably 30 or 40 stairs high in our analogy:
So there are two concrete 'stringers', maybe 80 feet apart. And that common prefab section? just a pre-made unit of 3 'treads' and 'risers' (in this pic there are no risers, but they're just the vertical piece that sits between each riser, preventing your foot from going through the stair). The 'tread' size in stadium construction is much longer than a staircase, obviously, but that is the general idea. Just get the two stringers in place, then plop down the tread/riser assemblies one at a time until you reach the top. Makes me almost want to build a model CBP.
Of course, WFO knows this already, and probably can fill in a lot more details, but it's always something that's been festering in the back of my mind for years, so now that I finally have resolution I bet you're all glad I shared.
