I worked with a guy who used to work in a UPS distribution center and that's pretty much how he described it. Also, you could give him any city in the US and he could tell you the zip code. It was rather amazing.

We sort mail by zip code or bar code. That's what's supposed to happen anyways.

When I read this earlier I had no idea what American Pharaoh was. Thought it was some sort of reality show maybe.

I went hiking in Zion today and missed all the sports history and greatness. I don't know how to feel.

hmmm...cities of any size have scores of zip codes

,

Smitty, you're a mail guy?

The best service, day in & day out, from any service professional that I've ever experienced has been that provided by one of our local postpersons. This guy should write a book on how to do customer service right. Blasts all the stereotypes to smithereens. Plus, tells the best jokes.

Do you know who I'm talking about ? 8-)

We have more guys and gals like that than people might think.

When I lived in Germany, it took like a week to get a piece of mail from Frankfurt to Ulm. When I returned stateside, I realized how good our Postal Service was. Nowadays, priority mail parcels take two days to get from Florida to Seattle.

I was a supervisor in the place that processes parcels to Washington State, Oregon, Alaska and Idaho. It's kinda awesome to see the whole thing work.

It may have been vice versa, I don't remember for sure. But I do remember him saying that as part of his training they all had to memorize that stuff.

yeah, I'd think a brain would start to imprint some of that stuff just from continual bombardment of city/zip pairings. I wonder if they expect staff to recognize cities/zips of places whose mail they seldom see coming/going?

something like this would explain my issue- dude sees the zipper for 'elkins, WV' and throws it in the bin with 'elk grove city, IL' because he got it muddled. But I didn't think anything happened with that kind of human interaction these days.

my package did leave elk grove and made it to charleston, WV now, so the recovery seems to have been pretty quick.
