Given the paucity of actual cases in play—virtually all news accounts recycle a handful of incidents in a few states—it’s clear that the main function of the current controversy is to make religious conservatives feel even more persecuted than usual and to make secular liberals feel as if they are making a last stand for human decency. ... “Indiana’s RFRA—and the response—is all about the signaling.”

I watched some of the debate yesterday in the Arkansas Legislature, and I got a feeling that some Republicans had painted themselves into a corner on this--they seemed to regret starting this process, but once it was underway, the political pressures seemed to give this thing its own momentum. Gov. Hutchinson seems to be willing to bail the Republicans out, if they'll let him.
I obviously didn't vote for the guy, and I don't agree with everything he's done, but especially if you compare him to other Republican governors, he's been excellent so far. Pragmatic and effective, which is really what you want in a governor. The trend towards ideological governors is in my opinion one of the worst things that's happened in our political system this decade. I guess it's nice that Asa, at 64, does not have White House fever. His Democratic predecessor, who was also quite effective, didn't have them either.
Huckabee makes an odd contrast. As governor, he wasn't bad. As a Presidential candidate, he's been a big jerk.
