I don't like Jeb Bush a lot, but all by himself he classes up/will class up the Republican primaries (there may be more 'qualified' candidates in the Republican field for 2016, but last time basically laid the bar right on the ground).

a minor edit to JH's otherwise superb Jebya brief:
Mitt Romney...was instrumental in the passage of a healthcare law that Obamacare greatly resembles

- right down to enlisting The Grubster to blueprint it

it's a clumsy attempt to rewrite history to pretend it was the other way around

ACA is a law moderate Republicans should, if not like, at least recognize the DNA of, and re-co-opt. Some are already moving in that direction. Jebya, or other candidates, will be wise to get on that train.
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

Rhode Island, for example, citing “a continuingly constrained budgetary environment,” cut its mental health funding by $33.6 million this year, according to NAMI, a 20 percent reduction. Michigan, Arkansas, Hawaii, Kentucky and Massachusetts also expanded Medicaid but reduced mental health funding this year.

A number of states that declined to expand Medicaid also reduced mental health spending, according to NAMI. Alaska, which cut mental health spending by 37 percent between 2009 and 2012, made further cuts in the last two years as it weathered falling revenue from declining oil prices. Nebraska, Louisiana and North Carolina, also followed mental health cuts made during the recession with additional reductions in fiscal years 2014 and 2015.
Coincident with the NAMI survey, MHA released its rankings on the mental health status of all 50 states and the District of Columbia based on the prevalence of mental illness and access to mental health services in each state. Access is measured by such indicators as the presence of barriers to treatment, such as lack of insurance, copays, coinsurance, denials of coverage and insufficient numbers of mental health providers. The survey was conducted before the full effects of health insurance expansion under Obamacare had taken effect.

Massachusetts, Vermont, Maine, North Dakota and Delaware topped the list while the bottom five were Arizona, Mississippi, Nevada, Washington and Louisiana.

There is a high, but not perfect, correlation between states’ rankings and whether they are Medicaid expansion states. Maine, third on the list, is not an expansion state. Conversely, Washington (48th), Nevada (49th) and Arizona (51st), all expanded Medicaid under ACA.

Overall, the report says that 42.5 million Americans suffer from some sort of mental illness, 19.7 million have a substance abuse problem and 8.8 million report that they have seriously considered suicide.

JH, you rightly point out that more or less moderate candidates--McCain and Romney have won the Republican nomination. But they lost the general. I think given the success in 2014, the Tea Party wing is going to be pretty persuasive arguing that nominating what they call a "principled" conservative is the path to victory. Add in the fact that these days, the non-establishment campaign machinery (AFP, CFG) seems to be more effective than anything put together by the RNC and I'm not sure you can project the recent pattern of nominating candidates who can move towards the center in the general into the future.

The NJ's legislature's plan to to fix AC is to pass legislation forcing Atlantic County to increase their county property tax. The money raised will go back to the casinos with huge tax breaks. What a disaster. This state is the worst.

Sen. Marco Rubio, R-Fla., said the new U.S. policy would do nothing to address the issues of Cuba's political system and human rights record.

"But it potentially goes a long way in providing the economic lift that the Castro regime needs to become permanent fixtures in Cuba for generations to come," Rubio said.

the embargo has worked so well for 50 years that we're now in year 50 of a Castro-less Cuba

Re: Jeb

I think Jeb and frankly all the Bushes are actually personally very likeable (yes, even W, although he is the least of the Big 3). I think if I knew them personally I would be friendly with any of them.

I share jh's dislike of this whole dynastical approach to the presidency that we seem to be developing, and indeed I would say I go further and disdain it. I think it is very, very bad for the country and it is among the principal (principle?) reasons I voted for Obama in the Democratic primary of 2008.

Of course I am an avowed liberal and do not want Jeb Bush - or any Republican - to be President. There are certainly worse choices than Jeb Bush if it must be a Republican, but as I said I really think if we wind up with a Bush/Clinton race in 2016 there can be no better indication of the need for electoral reform, and in fact I think a constitutional amendment that at least targets the disturbing dynastical trend, both at the Presidential and Congressional levels, ought to be seriously considered, for the health of democracy.
