A Golf TDI is a good car. What's the sticker price on it? How does that compare to new and other models on dealers lots (Autotrader.com)? What options are listed? Was it lease vehicle or a trade-in? What's left of the warranty? Have you received a valuation on your trade in from another dealer and looked it up on KBB?

Every couple of months I think I want to replace my truck. Then I remember I haven't had a vehicle payment since '06 and think, "Fuck that."

I'm at 127k, but my truck will be old enough to drive itself next year.

i would see how much you can get for your car. if it's not a lot i wouldn't get a new car now and would just ride that thing til it dies

my car is starting to get electrical gremlins and i don't want to deal with that. if it was just general wear and tear i think i would be fine. but right now i have a list of 8 things that would need to be fixed on the car and it would probably cost me several thousand dollars when all said and done. i havent' had a payment in a few years and i'll miss that for sure. this giant car isn't the practical for me anymore. i do mostly highway miles(70-80 round trip per day) and live in the city. i have no desire to move out of the city so this hulking monster of a car is just a pain in the ass to park/maneuver.

i'd be happy if they gave me 3k for my car. KBB has it at around 4k for a 'fair' evaulation on trade in.

Sticker on the 2013 is 25,900 with 9k miles on it. has factory warranty left on it and then they'll put an extra 2/24k on top of that. not sure when the shipped date of the car is(what matters for the warranty). ideally between trade in and and lower price of the car i could get it for around 19/20k which would put me around 350$ for 5 years. its basically fully loaded. VW doesn't' really do options. its the base car or its a nav/sunroof and the only options are cosmetic(rear spoiler, gfx kit)

do you negotiate the price of the car or do you negotiate the terms of the financing? i'm not willing to pay more than 350 a month for 5 years on the car. i should probably call my credit union and see what their rate is and compare it to what they'll offer me.

my OG plan was to put another set of tires on it and take it to 200k and then upgrade.
i need tires/balance/alignment.
my dash lights and fog lights don't work(electrical gremlin).
speakers don't work(i have to re-run wires)
upper control arm driver side is broken i think
neutral lock switch is broken. i have to stick my fingers in my shifter and press a button
i'm getting cam surges much more often right now while idling.

my biggest fear is that more electical things break after i invest ~2k in it this spring and the car is rendered useless. if the engine takes a dump on me(cam surging issue) then i'll be pissed as well for shelling out money to get this thing to a certain point.

not quite sure where the break even point is on shelling out maintenance for the car and the benefits of the new car.

i had to abandon it on an iceberg for a few days at the gym. luckily i work with several people who live in the city and get rides fairly easily.

Sounds like the VW makes a lot more sense right now. Been a while since I bought my car but regarding the negotiation stuff I found it easier to coordinate financing with an outside lender before working with the dealership (kinda like getting pre-approved for a mortgage before shopping for houses). I got the loan with Capital One auto financing. The rate was decent because of a promotion through my employer at the time (your company might have something similar). You get pre-approved up to a certain limit and they just send you a blank check to bring to the dealership, then you just have to worry about negotiating price and trade-in value.
Another day, another box of stolen pens.

Is the DMV going to let me get my license pic taken with an internet receipt, or do I actually need the camera card?
Fine. You wanna act like you're two? I'll act like I'm one.
