The double space after the period dates from the time when typewriter and computer fonts were non-proportional--that is, the letter "i" took up just as much space as an "M". But since sometime in the nineties, most people are using proportional space fonts. Thus, letters don't really have an extra space between them and a single space after a period looks better. Also, if you justify your columns, the computer will automatically make the space after a period as wide as necessary to make everything line up and look proportional.
