Random thoughts, mostly about junk food

it's unbelievable. you choose boiled or fried and you have the choice of potato, cheese, meat, spinach and cheese, sauerkraut and mushroom, or arugula and goat cheese filling
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

there's a place about 10 miles north of me that does that, but i'm not about to drive 20 minutes for it.

plus, i was raised on potato only. idk if it's just a lehigh valley thing or a slavic thing, but i never ate a pirogi with anything but potato and cheese filling before i left for college...

also, roman catholic church picnics have the best pirogis. something about repressed old catholics bring out the extra flavor in the dough

My nanny used to make pierogis from scratch, and kielbasa was on the regular rotation for dinner at my house. Miss it all. Today, I had russian dumplings, which it turns out aren't really much like pierogis. Also, I've had borscht here, and it was pretty good. Russians however seem to go crazy for it. They seem to love soup in general (and who can blame them since it's winter all the time) but borscht is their favorite.

My maternal grandmother made the bestest pierogi, the same that you'd get at church picnics. That's what we had every friday during lent, and about once a month the rest of the year. My dad made awesome potato pancakes. So church bazaar food was standard fare in our house.

My dad also made kielbasi with a hand grinder. His dad had a smoke shack in the yard. The cherry tree in our yard was odd looking due to all the sacrifices for the cause.

Bucky - I was at the mercy of my brother's kindness. I don't really like fresh kielbo to be honest.

What I am torqued off about is that I forgot to tell him to get a couple of pounds of the homemade sauerkraut at Czerw's...he also told me he bought two pounds of bacon and two pounds of kukuscka...bastard.

I haven't been to Swiacki's since I was a kid. Need to hit both of them in May when I head back up again. I love the bunny butter, that was a staple of my childhood...I found an Amish place down here in Maryland that makes it as well, so I've been able to score that.

Bill McNeal - MAJOR props for the babci reference. I was telling my kids about my babci - who was my great-grandmother - today. My daughter kept walking around saying "babci, I'm going to call granmom babci at Easter."

There were three kinds down Port Richmond back in the day.

Potato and cheese, farmer's cheese and sauerkraut. That's it. Now there's all sorts, the cheesesteak is so freaking awesome I could rip through two dozen in about 15 minutes, and I am not exaggerating.

St. George's and St Al's in Port Richmond were the bazaars of choice. Even the kids were allowed to gamble, I remember my baby brother winning an entire silverware set at the ripe age of 7 and then giving it to my grandmother because her silverware was so old and shitty that it was an immediate upgrade

My grandmother's made the potato pancakes for decades at St George's. 100 degrees and 90% humidity, sweating over a giant vat of bubbling oil...I remember those days so fondly, my extended family used to be really tight up until 82 or so, then it all slowly crumbled.

The food from Port Richmond is permanently intertwined with a lot of great memories. Sorry to get sentimental, but there's a special place in my heart for Port Richmond. It's where I was born...

I haven't, but one time I used a sharpie on a whiteboard.

Hope that helped.
