Can't believe BigEd76 didn't update the birthday thread. Hip hip!

I forged through a sickness to down two pounders for the effort. Think I'm still gonna pass on more than a dinner drink with my parents tomorrow. I love St. Patrick's Day but I generally prefer it in controlled doses. None of this Erin Express stuff. That's just a recipe for disaster for a regular drunk. You feel the need to step your already elite game up, and it's playing with fire at best.

Probably the 857th post on tipping but here goes. This one girl at our party tonight did not like the waitress because she didn't take away the dirty dishes quickly enough. I guess she felt it was her right to underpay for her drinks to decrease the amount of the tip to her liking.

I can't split checks with women anymore. Just can't do it.

ended up going out anyways because my friends were all out. bar had terrible karoke with ugly girls on the mic. woulda been terrible if some drunk dude didn't pick up our table's tab and buy us a buncha shots. his reasoning was that i looked sad without my beard and deserved to drink for free(there's kinda a weird boring backstory to this).

in short, my mind is changed about st. patty's day.

St Patty's Day and New Years Eve = amateur hour. Run,don't walk, away from these days.

Anyway, my brother went up to Czerw's butchers in Port Richmond (right around the corner from both sets of grandparents houses), and brought back a huge haul of Polish food:

5 pounds of smoked kielbasi
5 pounds of kibanosa - dry smoked sausage (Polish pepperoni)
5 dozen pirogi - cheese, sauerkraut, 3 cheese, and cheesesteak (had the cheesesteak last night so effing awesome)
2 cheese and raisan babkas from Marion's bakery
3 pounds of kristichi from Marion's (polish cookies called angel's wings)
2 pounds of chocolate chip cookies from Marions

Best part about it all was my kids loved the food as well. Five generations of my family now indoctrinated in eating Polish food, it's generally bad for you but tastes so good. Great day in general.

My qualm with St. Patty's is it seems to last all of March, w/ green zombies overrunning the city. But now that it's basically over I'm gonna go partake

My mother in law was born in Poland moved here in her 20's, and my wife's babci moved here about 20 years ago. I've been fully indoctrinated in the foods and that sounds awesome. At Christmas time my wife makes those polish cookies from scratch. Fucking amazing. I think the only thing that I don't like that they make is the Christmas borscht. Smells like dirty sock and tastes like it too.

Despite having Irish ancestry (my last name is originally Portuguese, but probably came to the US from Ireland or Scotland, and the other side of my family has a clearly Irish name), I've never self-identified as Irish (nor any other ethnicity), and St. Patrick's Day was a source of anxiety for me when growing up. If you didn't wear something green, the other kids would pinch you. One year I forgot to put on anything obvious, and had to show other kids the green stripe on the waistband of my tighty-whities to avoid getting pinched.

I don't think I'd ever even heard of pierogis, let alone had one, until college. Not a lot of Poles out west I guess.

On the original-to-grocery-store-brand scale, Mrs. T's aren't so bad. Key is to boil first, then fry or bake in butter & onions.

LG, that's awesome. I flip-flop between Czerws and Swiacki's. I have 12 days to decide before my next pilgrimage. I go on good friday and stock up the freezer for the year. Hurricane Sandy killed my last stockpile, so I haven't had any in a while. I also always get something (like that pepperoni stuff) for the ride home- it's fun to see the (not fake) shock on the staff when they say "but it's Good Friday! You can't eat meat! :)

A couple things missing from your list though- what about the fresh kielbasa?? Prepare it not unlike the pierogis, oddly enough. Boil for about an hour and then bake. And the Zayda's horseradish!!!! And for Easter I will get the butter in the shape of a bunny (or is it a chick?) just for kicks
