most of my close friends have been and are girls and this is how i dealt with the same situation...

once they send you a picture and they will, that is their way of sending you an invitation. until that time, i usually give them space because honestly, it's not my kid so i don't want to deal with all that post child birth stuff they go through. let the dad with that!

Waiting a week or two is also good because the parents will need things by then. Call them up, ask what they need and then bring it to them...along with some additional food.

A friend of mine brought over a big bag of cold cuts and rolls when he came. Best thing ever.

It's also good to wait a little bit for health reasons. A baby's immune system is just developing. Giving them some time would probably be a good idea.
