"If reducing the deficit helped the economy, we'd just go over the fiscal cliff." - Ezra Klein

the good thing about this 'fiscal cliff' is that everyone appears to realize that austerity now is a bad thing...but the solution is austerity in the future!

Hawaii's new senator is:
The 40-year-old Schatz, a former state representative and onetime chairman of the state Democratic party, said his top priorities would be addressing global climate change, preserving federal funds used in Hawaii for things like defense spending and transportation, and getting federal recognition for Native Hawaiians for forming their own government, similar to many Indian tribes.

Schatz, who ran with Abercrombie for the state's top two offices in 2010, beat out Hanabusa and Esther Kiaaina, a deputy director in the state Department of Land and Natural Resources

blech to defense spending, but I like the other stuff. Interested to read about more of his thoughts in the coming days, but to me this is a downgrade no matter who was picked. Losing such a strong person like Inouye is always rough, personally and politically.

Hanabusa was Inouye's choice, btw

Wishful Thinking and Middle-Class Taxes

Which brings us back to the middle class. When President Obama talks about taxing the rich, he means the top 2 percent of Americans. John A. Boehner, the House speaker, talks about an even thinner slice. But the current and future fiscal imbalances are too large to exempt 98 percent or more of the public from being part of the solution.

Ultimately, unless we scale back entitlement programs far more than anyone in Washington is now seriously considering, we will have no choice but to increase taxes on a vast majority of Americans. This could involve higher tax rates or an elimination of popular deductions. Or it could mean an entirely new tax, such as a value-added tax or a carbon tax.

Actually, we need both entitlement cuts and increases on taxes on everyone. We also need to cut defense spending. Alas, there are no votes supporting such policies. Actually, the way to do that is to print more money, which effectively raises taxes and cuts spending.

we do not need entitlement cuts. we need more healthcare reform. the problem is not the program, it's the system it works in.

I remember when Romney was making this Mankiw message the centerpiece of his campaign.

oh, wait, no, I don't

no one imagines we need not change any existing programs. Let's begin this Grand Cooperation by restoring trust that everyone's got skin in the game. By beginning with those having the most skin, grown from the times when they had the least in.
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

Notice that he doesn't do the numbers? That's because he's completely wrong.

If you do the numbers, the deficit is almost exlusively a product of a depressed economy and not over-spending. For an explanation, read this.
