I think this may be interesting to a bunch of you here on this board, though honestly I don't have time to read the whole thing right now.

Also, there's a discussion of it over on crookedtimber.org.

I really do think that persistence as a characteristic essential to success is undervalued. An education system predicated on reaching certain benchmarks at certain times or be counted as left behind isn't conducive to teaching the value of persistence. And so it is no wonder we have so many drop outs.

Good stuff, TV

while I don't find Heckman's assertions persuasive*, I like their contrast with Krugman's perspective.

*for example, this suggests to me that Heckman has only the loosest grasp of the basics of cause/effect relationships:

Properly measured, the high school graduation rate (over the past 30 years) in America has fallen. Over that same period, the real wages of high school graduates have increased relative to those of high school dropouts. These growing wage differentials have increased the economic incentive to graduate from high school. So the reversal in graduation rates is striking and troubling.

It seems pretty clear he takes from this simple correlation a causative relationship that almost certainly is not as straightforward as he believes.

What I think most commentators critical of Heckman miss (and I don't think Heckman considers this either) but the kind of political change that would encourage a more egalitarian economic system requires the people at the bottom to be able to recognize their circumstances. That is, if the interventions Heckman discusses really work, they will do more than simply create people more able to cope with "things as they stand" they will move us in a direction where there will be political pressure to change how things stand.

Nate weighs in on Hilary's 2016 POTUS chances

Conclusion, paraphrasing: "if she chooses to run, and wins a party's nomination, and then receives enough votes in the election, she could win the office"

I'd like to her see run as well. If she does, Republicans are going to play right into her hands. It should be fun to watch.

"It's a form of argument that I thought you would have known, which is called the 'reduction to the absurd,'" Scalia told Hosie of San Francisco during the question-and-answer period. "If we cannot have moral feelings against homosexuality, can we have it against murder? Can we have it against other things?"

Scalia said he is not equating sodomy with murder but drawing a parallel between the bans on both.

I have moral feelings against Scalia. Therefore, he should be banned by law.

everybody blaming the unions for Hostess falling may need to retract their previous statements
Hostess Brands acknowledged for the first time in a news report Monday that the company diverted workers’ pension money for other company uses.

The bankrupt baker told The Wall Street Journal that money taken out of workers’ paychecks, intended for their retirement funds, was used for company operations instead. Hostess, which was under different management at the time the diversions began in August 2011, said it does not know how much money it took.

In November, a judge approved Hostess' plan to pay $1.8 million in bonuses to 19 executives, according to CNBC. Rayburn declined to take a bonus but also avoided a company-wide pay cut that he imposed, Hostess told HuffPost.
Twinkies are unlikely to go extinct, since Hostess is in talks with 110 buyers about its brands. But the snack cake genre may need a revamp, as Americans have become increasingly health- and quality-conscious.

So, Zero Dark Thirty decided to show torture scenes as the reason we found bin Laden...when we didn't??? they just wanted a better-looking movie. and now people are taking the movie as fact. sigh

One of the few things were John McCain is still sane on is torture, and he has called it a bald-faced lie.
