"by the way" = "incidentally" = not (directly) related to the main subject. So, in your example "by the way" is used exactly correctly.

So it is. It's still odd that it seems the only way of making introductions in the situation I presented.

I never bothered to look up what Freeonlinedictionary.com's opinion was until now. I always interpreted it as "coincidentally", not "incidentally", and I think it's easy to see why.
