Gasland director was arrested at the House for filming a hearing on fracking. Jerry Nadler said it's the first time he's ever seen someone who was filming something, accredited or not, be arrested if they were being quiet.

Engineer positions are abundant. the entire baby booming workforce is about to retire.

just read a "mentoring" powerpoint at work and it noted(and i'm not exaggerating) that we're set to hire 5700 new engineers in the next 5 years(powerpoint was 2 years old). we are doing daily interviews with candidates for our group(20 are within retiring age or at retiring age) and thats just our group. there's 12 other groups in my building in the same position and thats not counting the ~200+ plant sites that we have that all have an engineering staff.

there is a lot of outsourcing of engineering and design though, which saddens me.

But I'd like to note, this amendment was sponsored by 2 Republicans. But Republicans defeated it as well.

Is it too late to change careers and get a 2nd undergraduate degree in engineering in my late 30s?

Get your engineering degree, then go into patent law

There was recently a series of long articles in the NYT (and maybe I read some in others spots) about Apple's manufacturing and supply chains in China. One Apple exec stated (off the record) that making an iPhone in the U.S. would only cost $37 more than what they do currently, but that the U.S. "just can't supply the number of engineers we need". I'm not sure if that statement should continue "...at the salary we would pay", but I think this merits further investigation.

met a guy at work through our softball team. he went into the field program(new location every 2 years with different engineering responsibilities). his first rotation was so bad/miserable that he applied to Vanderbilt for either patent or IP law. ended up getting accepted with some scholarship so he went that route. he talked to the lawyer group at work and they said that if there's a position open at the time they'll fill it with him when he graduates.

That doesn't make sense. Where the iPhone is assembled and where the R&D facilities are located are two different things. The engineers aren't going to be sitting there assembling the pieces into an iPhone. They will be designing it. My understanding is that the reason the iPhone is assembled in China is because the assembly workers over there are paid next to nothing.

au contraire, mon frere. Apparently there are thousands of engineers in these factories designing, building, and maintaining the manufacturing equipment. And redesigning everything at the whim of some skinny dude in the U.S. (RIP)

they have to do a redesign of the entire factory basically every 2 years. that takes an army of engineers/designers.

Those are like manufacturing engineers. I was thinking of the engineers that actually designs the product itself. There must be a shortage of manufacturing engineers in this country because there's not a lot of manufacturing going on here anymore.

economy shows sustained growth, adds 243,000 and the jobless rate is at a 3 year low of 8.3%. Oh noes... spin GOP spin.

<edit> I just hear the spin... the numbers sound better then they are... the economy has been damaged beyond repair by Obama... the president is a heck of a nice guy, but in way over his head... are you better off they you were 4 years ago?

If I recall correctly, the discussion on Apple and similar manufacturing focused more on the supply chains referenced above than on the availability of skilled workers. So many of the parts used for electronics are also produced in Asia that it currently makes more sense to assemble there where resupplying components is faster and cheaper. Plus the Asian market itself is so large and it can be more easily served by (sort of) domestically produced goods, while items brought in from the US are subject to the currency valuations that increase the price of goods (I'm not going to pretend to fuly understand this).

The availability of cheap, skilled, replaceable labor is also a factor, but only one of many. One wonders how much the labor market, though, is a chicken and egg thing, where if domestic manufacturing engineers were seen as in demand whether more would then enter the field.

Yeah, that was the gist. But that was in there, and I cherry picked it due to conversation.

Looks like it wouldn't be too much fun as they seem a little saggy, not at all trampoline like. Do they collect you and shoot you for damaging the reputation of the state?

Check out that cheery view on the left side of the building... is that just a huge, gray wall?
