however depressed you may be, it seems like you'd want to find yourself a taller building to fling yourself from, just to increase your odds of accomplishing the intended objective.

Imagine showing up for a job interview at a place featuring netting of that sort. I know they probably don't interview in the dorms, but still

the spin is 'look what the GOP house is doing!!' i've already seen is parroted about five times just this morning. the president is responsible for losses, but the house for gains

There is a reason that congress has something around a 12.5% approval rating and it is on display whenever the House and Senate meet. Imagine these noise makers talking about how horrible the president is with his sub-fifty percent approval rating from a group with a sub-fifteen percent approval rating.

I think that the Foxxconn life is pretty choice job for most of the Chinese. Nets are an employee benefit.

Iran’s Supreme Leader Threatens Retaliation Against Attack

“Americans say all options are on the table, even the option of military strike,” [Ayatollah Kahmenei] said, according to a Reuters translation of his televised remarks. “Such threats show that they have no sufficient discourse against Iran’s logic and discourse.”

The breast cancer people have changed their mind and are going to keep giving money to the abortion people. Maybe by tomorrow my facebook feed can be about important things like what food people are eating and whining about work/school/significant others again.

yes, finally. there's nothing more painful than a $429 million organization withdrawing $680,000 from a $1 billion organization.

Good for Komen, I guess. Their explanation is transparently false, but it's tough to admit when you're wrong so they deserve some credit.

I still prefer to give my money to organizations that directly provide low-cost health services to women. Like, say, Planned Parenthood.

I was kinda annoyed when Planned Parenthood sent out an e-mail the other day with the subject line: "Wow. Just wow."

Wait a second, are those the safety nets that Romney keeps talking about?

Nevada has a huge Mormon population.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:LDS_Percentage_of_Population_2000.PNG

7% of Nevadans are LDS

It's sizable compared to most places and will help Romney in a low turnout caucus, but he's winning other folks as well

Why's Santorum still in it? Upping his speaker fees? Paul's an ego-stroker,so we know why he's in it. Gingrich hates Romney and loves himself. But Santorum? He might be the one just trying to get his message of going back to the invisible era of Leave it to Beaver.

He's got better approval ratings than Gingrich, so I guess the idea is to stick around and see if conservatives eventually will unite around him. He's not being overly negative, so there isn't a big outcry for him to get out. Also what better does he have to do at the moment?

He probably doesn't think much of Newt, so it's not like he cares if him staying in the race boosts Romney a bit.

Sheesh--do I have to spell it out? Santorum is staying in the election because the Republican Establishment wants him there to steal the election for Romney from Newt and Paul. What could be more obvious?

swishnicholson wrote:If I recall correctly, the discussion on Apple and similar manufacturing focused more on the supply chains referenced above than on the availability of skilled workers. So many of the parts used for electronics are also produced in Asia that it currently makes more sense to assemble there where resupplying components is faster and cheaper. Plus the Asian market itself is so large and it can be more easily served by (sort of) domestically produced goods, while items brought in from the US are subject to the currency valuations that increase the price of goods (I'm not going to pretend to fuly understand this).

The availability of cheap, skilled, replaceable labor is also a factor, but only one of many. One wonders how much the labor market, though, is a chicken and egg thing, where if domestic manufacturing engineers were seen as in demand whether more would then enter the field.

2 things I recall from the article is the story of how, just 2 weeks before the release date of the 1st iPhone, Steve Jobs wanted to change the screen to a glass screen instead of plastic. The Chinese factory was able to rouse 200K workers from their dorms and get them working at midnight. It was also able to hire an additional 200K workers almost overnight. Can you imagine any production plant in America being able to hire that many people almost instantly to work long hours and live in dorms?

The article also noted that the lack of engineers was of some sort of engineer who didn't quite need an undergraduate degree and then went on to say that the decline of trade schools and skills training in high schools was the reason for the shortage of those kinds of engineers. I don't know if the "engineer" they are describing in the article that China has an abundance of and the US lacks is what we traditionally think of as an "engineer."
