Mightn't be so bad. He could just be a freelancer looking for a regular income stream.

Going out to lunch with my grandma can be so bitter/sweet. On the one hand, I get a free lunch. On the other hand, she tips about 3 bucks, and I usually have to make up an excuse to go back to the table and throw down a few extra bones.

on a similar note, is there a worse friend than the one who pretends not to understand that they're like $5 under what they needed to put in for a meal? Well mine is 15 and I put in 18, so and so's was 10 and put in 12...we're like 3 bucks short...

Then you just want to be like STOP PLAYING DUMB YOU MUTHERFUCKER YOURE WORKING ON A PHYSICS DEGREE I KNOW YOU CAN DO BASIC ARITHMETIC. Instead you're like...blank stare...I don't have anymore cash...blank stare. (murderous thoughts rising)...Meanwhile everyone has stood up because you should have left like 2 minutes ago...so now it's this cosmic stare down and said friend is all like LOOK AT MY PUPPY DOG EYES IM SO CONFUSED AS TO WHY WE DONT HAVE ENOUGH MONEY and you're like...I want to shank you in the shank hole right now.

That shit drives me nuts. Sometimes it's as simple as people forgetting to factor in tax, or tipping 15% when I would have gone 20%, but other times it's just plain ignorance. Here's a wild idea -- maybe throw in a few extra just in case.

Fortunately, my friends these days always pay on credit card, so I throw in cash for what I owe (plus a few bucks) and tune out.

I've recently taken it upon myself to be the accountant of my group whenever we go out. I have one friend who always comes up short with the bill, and then everyone else has to put up an extra dollar or two to make up the difference. I decided to put an end to this. I declare what everyone owes, prior to tax and tip. If someone disputes what I'm saying, then everyone gets to look at the check and decide what's what- a very Scarlett Letter experience for the cheap bastards.

I hate going out to eat with 4+ people for this reason. I hate the guy who gets an appetizer and entree at lunch when everyone else is just getting a sandwich or a burger then acts like the split should be even. When I'm the guy who's going off the reservation like this I always ask for a separate check when we are doing the orders, I don't care if it's a pain in the ass for the waitress to do that, she'll make out better in the end, I'm sure.

A few years back I went to lunch at an Applebee’s near my office and I knew the waiter, he was a guy I went to HS with, so he hooked us up and my bill for lunch wound up being like $4, I think he charged me for my drink and fries only, but I put in a $20 to take care of the dude, well someone else who was with me put in just enough so we would cover the bill exactly, no tip, and left. I guess it's my fault for not checking the cash before we left, but I figured if everyone else put in what they owed plus a dollar or whatever, he'd still make out well. I didn't find out until the next time I went in, I saw my friend the waiter again, and was like hey man, what's up! He pulled me aside and bitched me out for not leaving him a tip, I was really embarrassed and gave him some cash to cover for the tip from before and apologized over and over, but I couldn't got back in there after that. Felt like such an ass-hole after that.

This sucks. I hope you can parlay it into something better, based on the stuff you posted here about excel and what not, I'd hire you. You need to get a better job than customer service, you are a bright dude, you can make it happen.

Funny bit from a guy who won a 2009 Nobel Prize in medicine for his work on telomeres.

NYTimes wrote:Did the Nobel Prize change your life?

The thing about the Nobel ceremony is that for a whole week, you get treated like a superstar. You get driven everywhere. You have minders who always make sure you get where you’re going. And you always get into the back seat of the limo.

So we were told this story about one Nobel laureate who flies home, and he goes to get his car and he gets into the back seat and he just waits.

I like to imagine this is typical Nobelist behavior

I know I can. It's frustrating though, I have this real clear idea of what I want to do but somehow I've completely failed at figuring out how to set up a way to dick around with SQL at home. I also speak fluent French, that has to count for something right?

Also, thank you.

When dining with a group, you either just split it evenly, or get separate checks. If someone orders a surf and turf or something else that's say more than 50% the price of every one else's order, then they should offer to put in a double share or something.

What sort of drives me a little nuts is when someone takes it upon themselves to order appetizers "for the table" or a couple of bottles of wine assuming you want those things--maybe I want my own appetizer and a beer.

One great thing about Vegas is separate checks are basically the norm--it should be that way everywhere. And if you want to be a big shot and order some fancy ass bottle of wine for the table, put it on your check.

I disagree. I think it's easy as hell to all figure out what you owe. Heck, I think most competent people keep a running tab in their head as they go. And I think most non-cheap people know that the way to avoid any hassle is to just throw in an extra dollar or two so then the worst case scenario is that whoever counts at the end says, "Oh, this is a bit too much, here's a dollar back everyone"

I should mention, my last job I basically invented an inventory tracking methodology, located 10s of thousands of dollars of missing inventory, created all kinds of extra space for new items, found solutions to problems that no one was willing to tackle for years and by and large got the most I possibly could out of a group of borderline sub humanoids I worked with.

If I could have hung on working there I'd be warehouse manager as of last month but I really couldn't swing having $40 to spend a month and having my commuting expenses close in on about $200
