I usually lie and tell myself I'll be productive before kickoff. I'm gonna waste the next two hours, then get angry at the Giants for three hours, and then take a nap. Big Sunday I got planned.

Interesting article on those 'ol "11 Records for 1 cent!" mail-order clubs Columbia House and BMG. I always wondered what was up with them. I stopped buying from them when I went through a "record collecting" phase when all the Beatles' Apple catalog was going for lots of dough. I noticed (all on my own) that the stuff you got through the clubs was never the original label- it all had a "manufactured by Columbia House/BMG" mark on it, and I theorized that these wouldn't be worth anything as opposed to the "original" pressings. Now the strange part- these clubs never actually licensed the music they sold- they would pay the publishers 75% of the going rate. Then, if they publishers complained, they would simply stop selling it. So they basically stole the music and made up their own price to compensate the the actual license holders. There are a few loose ends- like how did they obtain the master tapes and album art?- but I'm sure there are answers outside of this short article.

Edit- Oh yeah- I forgot- those "11 free albums"? They really were almost free. The clubs never paid anything to the copyright holders for titles distributed as part of your enrollment bonus. Mind boggling how this all went down.
