Even though your fellow wonks are paying attention to this stuff, you're under no obligation to.

I've been overly glib with Mr. Daj. Do what you want, I suppose great political ideas come out from this type of ruminations and it clearly does have more value than analyzing a debate. I think I reacted to it for three reasons:

a. People who want to start a commune talk similarly - it was a little kumbayah-ish.
b. It's very reminiscent of political blogs where Beltway Insiders don't understand that they're not as important as they think they are
c. The US really isn't as bad as everyone thinks it is. Right now we're a political process that has to be "forced" into action via deadlines/crises, but we essentially always get things done. You might benefit from just taking a walk from the political conversation on any given topic and just coming back to it the day of a deadline. The sausage making does not make you hungry for sausage.

See, if this had been your initial post, no one would have jumped on you.

I thought all we were doing was some harmless theoretical musing. This was not a white paper or a policy recommendation or an expression of desire, I don't know why you seemed to think it was.

Jon Stewart Blasts Obama Administration for Solyndra Scandal

Image

The best part of all of this is in my media and politics class today, the kids were going on and on about how utterly useless Fox News was, and I gave a partial defense for media fragmentation, basically saying that both sides occasionally spit out a gem where their inherent distrust for the other side uncovers something legit that the smaller, horse race focused mainstream media might otherwise ignore. But that the mainstream media still had a vital role to play to separate the real scandals from the hyped up fluff (and to tear down some of the outright lies), and bring the misdeeds to the folks who don't spend their time watching, listening to or reading online the partisan media sources.

I brought up ABC breaking the story on the Solyndra-White House connections this week after Fox and the rest of the right wing echo chamber had been banging on about Solyndra for the past few weeks. And no one in the class outside of the professor had any idea what I was talking about. And many were all proud about how they get most of their political news from the Daily Show (it's a mix of communications grad students and poli sci phds in the class).

I'm gonna be an ass about this next week.

Howzabout that Rick Perry?!? Pretty crazy, huh? Gee, I wonder who will win the next meaningless debate?!?

Rick Perry's nickname was "Crotch"...

I first met Rick Perry in 1985. He was a Democratic freshman state rep, straight off the ranch in Haskell, Texas. He wore his jeans so tight, and, umm, adjusted himself so often that my fellow young legislative aides and I used to call him Crotch.

I think literally everything about this post is wrong, from the mischaracterization of the discussion to misspelling "Galactica" to conflating different sci-fi shows.

The premise is that our national structure/model is not now a good fit for our circumstances. If other proposals are "not of fruit," well, it is a fucking Internet site, the playoffs are assured, and to me this is more interesting than yet more talk about the horserace.

The BSG reference was just to get your goat, my point is that you're incredibly out of touch with the view point of the average American if you think this is something on even the distant horizon, if nothing else than for the fact that nationalism is stronger in America than pretty much every other first or even second world nation in the world combined.

I'm increasingly sure you didn't understand what I was saying in the first place. Consider, for instance, how "nationalism" might read differently in MA than in TX.

Also, "I was intentionally trying to be stoopid" isnt much of a response.

To give the easy example, you can be most proud of the military's badassery or progress toward civil rights. Or love the country because it's totally perfect as-is or because it's shown the capacity to make progress toward its stated values.

My mom likes BMWs because they are safe, I like BMWs because they are really fast. Our reasons are polar opposite but we are both going to keep buying BMWs.

Palestine is set to become a non-member state. The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.

I feel like this could have been turned into a really cheesy movie line. All you needed to do was: "The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice. Palestinian Justice."
