Fitler Square is where I'd like to be, but "prices aren't too bad" definitely doesn't apply.

At least the Walnut St Bridge is a bargain though. I heard they were gonna offer it up for sale to raise funds since the incinerator deal fell through. Half off.

It does that well, and even the necessary but unfortunate crossing where 76 off lads are at least very visible and metered.

It's just odd that in a bridge linking the row houses of South Philly to the historic brick buildings of Penn is all brushed steel, chain link and concrete. Plus the towers that were supposed to be the main architectural element were scrubbed at the last minute due to lack of funds and design questions, so you just have stubs of these things sprouting u without purpose.

It's now a superb way to get across the river, offers great views of the city and if it ever gets built to specifications I think it will be interesting to see from the water. But in and of itself it's pretty brutal.

design and detail really does seem to get taken for granted by the modern need to make everything as cheap as possible. :(

a nice public building is called a white elephant. a nice school is called a palace. we cant have nice things because the public doesnt want them anymore...but then wonder why we cant build things like we used to,

This article is older, but details well the original plans and how community outcry managed to actually make a difference. And the bridge is definitely more bike and pedestrian friendly than originally designed, and that really is the most important piece. But the aesthetic improvements all seem to be unbuilt, awaiting warmer weather or simply went unnoticed by my eye.

can't believe i missed out on dogging Manayunk :(

seriously, it's one of the safest areas in the city and it's beautiful around there. but everyone is right, it's kind of a damper on getting in and out of Center City and it's loaded with douchebags (though obviously, like you said, you can kind of find your niche and stay out of their way). The Bike Race is awesome every year, and it's one of those keg party/barbecue days that's unique to Philly.

East Falls is my Holy Grail. My dad grew up in the projects there and my aunts and uncles have all lived there as adults. And now it's a nice growing neighborhood. And it's right on Kelly Drive.

Fitler Square is really nice. swish, I think the poor design of the bridge is kind of unimportant because of how damn perfect that view of the city is. I always force anyone driving me into my neighborhood to take the South Street Bridge just because.

Yeah, and plus it's cool how it links up with the Schuylkill trail and also the new fields Penn is putting in on the other side of the river. The only reason it bugs me is that it seems like people went to a lot of work to get it right, and I would have rather it turned out to be a model for next time so that people could say,"See, it can be done. Give us one of those."

That's not true. It would have probably bugged me more if no one had paid any attention to the deign and it had turned out ugly. I just like to gripe.
