I understand what you two are driving at, but my point wasn't so much about the recording of personal indiscretions like "too much fun at a party back in college," but ratherthe recording of written political opinions about all kinds of things. Before a person runs for office, it might not occur to them to refrain from updating their Facebook status with unpopular opinions like, "Israel is stealing Palestinian land, and the suicide bombers are engaging in just conflict," or "All abortion doctors should be tried as murderers" in fits of youthful zealotry. Thirty years ago, if, in the heat of a debate with college friends, a person let an over-the-top comment like that slip, it mostly disappeared into the ether. Certainly it would be unlikely to come back to haunt them in the future.

But now, in a digital age where people have their overwrought idealist-phase immature political conversations on things like Twitter and Facebook instead of in smoked-filled rooms over beers, there might be a record of something crazy somebody said when they were drunk once.

This is what I mean when I say these companies could have enormous power: they have a bunch of kids on their services, writing things and making them public when they haven't full thought through the consequences of digitizing an impassioned, of-the-moment opinion they might hold in the heat of a moment but realize is wrong on sober reflection.

Yes, the American people have been forgiving of personal peccadilloes, when those indiscretions have had little bearing on a person's politics. But what if instead of pictures of a guy smoking a joint or fondling some woman at a frat party emerge, what we get instead are unfortunate political statements made in the heat of the moment 20 years ago on Facebook? Will people be so forgiving then?

I think it'd be useful for voters to somehow come to understand that people, not just politicians, aren't perfect and shouldn't expect them to be 100 percent consistent throughout their entire lives. It's completely unrealistic.

In 20 years, if someone digs up a decades-old screenshot of a Dem presidential candidate's facebook account, and it says "All abortion doctors should be tried as murderers," that would probably cause a stir. The candidate's opponents would probably create an ad insinuating the candidate isn't pro-choice and is radical, when, in fact, the candidate might have learned more about the topic and become pro-choice, or at least come to think abortion doctors aren't murderers. The cat might be out of the bag by then, I don't know.

I mean, people learn and evolve, and I would be more frightened of a politician who never learned or questioned his/her beliefs. If you showed me a 50-year-old candidate who has had the exact same political value system and a perfect record of statements for 30 years, I will not be pulling that lever, because the candidate is likely close-minded.

Of course, the problem is, political advertising is extremely good at exploiting a single inconsistency. I don't know how you avoid that as a candidate, other than to go on the offensive and be completely forthright. Give pressers and statements, release videos discussing the topic so the opponent can't have an advantage, but don't saturate. I do think voters will understand politicians aren't perfect, you just have to remind them. I also think the approach goes only so far. Like if there's a picture of you doing something truly horrible, like holding a stack of cash at a dog fight, there's no coming back from that.

I've come to find out that it takes one full day for me to get a 5 o'clock shadow, which I look best with. So, I guess I'm shaving every Thursday night from now on.

And yes, I do realize I ended both those sentences with prepositions.

In 20 years, the great majority of voters will have been using facebook and twitter and similar social media platforms that will be developed in the future for 20 years. I'm sure the voters will not have the same standards as they do today. Like jh said, even the social standards from 20 years ago, for Bush v Dukakis or Bush v Clinton wouldn't apply today.

Voter standards evolve as voters evolve.

http://doylestown.patch.com/articles/cb ... t-students

CB East! A teacher was fired for trashing her students and their parents on a blog. Good idea! My favorite part is the students' responses:

“You have cheated, screwed and under-cut every single one of your students this year. And I speak for everyone when I say you were a douche to all of your students in class and made no effort to help any of us achieve our academic goals. Maybe you should learn to teach and be compassionate with your students. Respect goes a long way, and the only way people will respect you is if you respect them (too late). Have a nice life. Good luck with the inner-city shithole they call a school in philly.”

"As a former student of yours, I am so happy to see you mess up this bad. I pray and hope you get fired for this. The reason that you encounter any of these problems is because you are simply the most hated teacher in the school…I hope that you never return from maternity leave, things do not get better, and that you enjoy working for your local trash company.”
no offense but you are everything that's wrong with America

http://www.noob.us/miscellaneous/father ... -the-year/

The video depicts some tribal guy climbing up a huge tree and getting stung by a bunch of bees just to get honey for his family.

The comments on the page are just hilarious.

wait… you americans don’t do it this way?

Getting honey in America is hard too! First you have to use gas in the car and that is expensive, then you have to brave the dangerous roads full of woman drivers and possibly even asians.

Among the cooler aspects of social media is seeing Green, Monroe, Sapp, Summers, Ewing Jr. and other recent Hoyas be really excited before/during/after the game.

unofficial breakdown of hibachi chef's 30 tosses tonight:

4 = landed in mouth
10 = nailed forehead
8 = nailed chest
8 = missed person completely

He also swung and destroyed a coworker's glass of water, and the waitress spilled a Miller Lite on another coworker. Metlike results.
