Is there anyone who has it easier in life than the two members of the Black Eyed Peas who aren't Will.i.am or Fergie?

What exactly do they bring to the table? Yet they rake in the dough.

That's a pretty bad criticism.

I go back and forth on the anthem. The music, to sing, is difficult, but it is pleasant enough when played instrumentally. Has a certain majesty to it. The lyrics, when read, are really awful - it is a third rate piece of poetry - but have the distinct advantage of not referencing God, where admittedly better songs (America the Beautiful, Battle Hymn of the Republic) do reference God. I'd really rather not force one more God reference into the group of cultural artifacts that make up the backbone of American mythology, thank you very much.

I don't have a problem with criticism of the lyrics of the Anthem as bad poetry (though I think you'd have to go further than that to show that it's a bad anthem), but the column that Housh linked didn't actually do that. It just made fun of the archaic language, which is pretty dumb. Should we adopt a new anthem every fifty years or so to avoid having archaic language?

I also think a case could be made that a national anthem shouldn't be difficult to sing for most of the people whose anthem it's supposed to be. However, the article doesn't really make that point either, though I suppose it hints at it. I'm not sure I agree anyway; the article points out that most Americans can at least fake their way through it when it's played at ballgames and so forth, and how much more than that is required of the average citizen?

I agree with you on the "God" issue, as I'm pretty sure I posted in a recent thread specifically about the National Anthem.

Sort of like Bill Wyman and Charlie Watts, but without the musical ability.

(note: in reading Keith Richard's autobiography, it's funny how little they figure in Keith's story. Mick is there of course, but not surprisingly in a negative way.)

Well, Wyman and (especially) Watts DID bring a lot to the table, because they helped shape the sound that made the Stones what they are. That they don't have much in the way of personality or have much say in the running of the band as a business entity doesn't change that.

What do these BEP'ers do aside from chant occasionally?

what's the best place to upload/host an mp3 file that also offers code for embedding said file into a website?

Don't know if it's the best but I used this:
http://www.divshare.com

for tmacsucks and it's been great. Don't know if it would be different on a higher traffic site. You do get occasional nags to upgrade to a pay account but you just click "no thanks".
