Sick for real, maybe the flu, I dunno. I've slept a lot since about 8:30 last night.

Was supposed to go to the Garden tonight. Fiddlesticks.

Same thing happened to me, including having to eat a ticket to the Hoyas game tonight. Clearly St. John's has invested in some sort of biological warfare device.

so aside from the thing I'm annoyed about at work, my mom also apparently has no fucking clue, still, that at this point in my life i'm not really interested in waking up at the crack of fucking dawn to go to my dentist in the Far Northeast while living in South fucking Philly with no fucking car.

so when I was poised to call out sick Friday for my dentist appointment and, in combination with my days off Wednesday and Thursday and the vacation day I had to take for my sister's graduation party Saturday, she told me it's at 8 fucking 15 a.m. Saturday morning. now, this sounds like some spoiled i-can't-handle-my-own affairs shit but I originally scheduled this appointment myself for December 29 for 2:30 in the afternoon, which would have been awesome. but when they called (presumably my parents' house because I guess I never changed that contact info) a month ago to reschedule, she just did it without asking me. a Saturday morning! jesus christ! why would i ever want to do that?

so when she told me this today, i attempted to reschedule for later in the day, which obviously didn't fucking happen because it's five fucking days before the appointment. so now i'm fucked into working this Friday night and going to the dentist next Friday. jesus christ.

I'm pretty sure I have a cold too. Alternately stuffy and runny nose. A little bit of congestion.

I have a little cold. It's not too bad though. I don't think it's gonna get worse.

So I foul up and miss submitting a work assignment for school (two weeks late, no less). I do the mental calculation and determine that the assignment is only worth 6% of the grade and decide to just take the zero rather than spending two-four hours in completing it just to suck up. Since then I have a mid-to-high A average in the course with one assignment and a final (worth 20%) to go. Despite not even caring if I get an A or a B, I could take the zero and still get an A.

Yesterday (two months later), the professor sends me a note "WHERE IS WORK ASSIGNMENT 1?"

I explain that I expected to get a zero for being so late and didn't submit it.

He replies today "SUBMIT AND YOU WILL BE OK"

Right, dick, but I don't want to do the fucking work at this point.

TV, is he doing this on purpose to eff me? Is he sitting there thinking "I bet this guy and his A average just wants to get the zero and do less work well not in my CLASS I WASN'T BORN YESTERDAY YOU KNOW?" Or does he think he's doing me a favor for being a good student? Cause if he does, he's not. Either way, I don't see how I can get away without doing it now.

He's from the "check off the boxes" school of grading - he's literally not even thinking about the matter. He knows you haven't handed in the assignment, but has not considered whether or not you have consciously chosen NOT to.

The scary thing is, since that's his approach, he is probably also incapable of following his own formulae to do the math to calculate your correct grade for the course.

You could try diagramming the math FOR him, but that may seem a bit condescending.
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

My Visual Basic class in college was like this. Our final was worth 2% of the final grade and I was sitting at a 92 in the class. I calculated that no matter what I did on the final, I was getting an A-. The final was on a Thursday and I was done all my other finals on Tuesday, so I decided to say the hell with it and part Tuesday and Wednesday night. got my grades over the break, B+. E-mail the prof about it and he gave me some roundabout explanation about how he took off points for attendance. Well, a few emails late between me, him, and the PSU COMPSCI department and I had my A-.

Hopefully this guy doesn't screw you over like that, because it was kind of a pain to go through.

Despite my A's up to this point, this is an "arts" class, which means grading is largely subjective. I learned the hard way early on not to challenge teachers in these classes, and I don't really feel like doing it in one of my last two classes ever. It's just too hard to make a case that you met the assignment criteria if they decide to take it out on you.

Oh well, he didn't say WHEN I had to hand it in "to be okay". I'm going to bed.

It's funny - I had three different instructors at Rutgers excuse me from taking the final exam because I had an A and "It could only hurt my grade". In one case, it was formal and in the syllabus. I just never thought of it that way. To me, the final was one last chance for them to prove that I didn't know what i was doing... or something. Conversely, they appeared to look at it from the perspective that I clearly had the material down and they no longer needed to quiz me to prove it. I was shocked, actually.

Profs do all kinds of nutty things. Most likely he hasn't calculated the final grade and is just trying to give you a break even though he isn't.

Sometimes, assignments are considered course requirements--that is, you need to complete the assignment to pass the course. Of course, if this is the policy, it should be clearly stated on the syllabus.

kind of weird that no one, out of the twenty articles printed about the death of mike o'pake, mentioned he was gay and that his life-long partner was there up front. kinda sucks for that guy that the media kept o'pake closeted to much of the public, even after death. i'll never understand how he voted against his own interests in that respect, either. still a great man.

well lots of people know. that wasnt my point. lots of people didn't. i would think it would change a lot of views to see another side of such a great man.

whatever, i know it's kind of macabre to be talking about it like there's some obligation from the media. still, they usually mention the wives.

Kind of like a programmable thermostat?
Love mine....house is cold as an iceberg when I'm not home, it starts warming up just before I usually arrive....
Only problem is if I stay up too much later than usual, the house gets really cold, since it's programmed to cool down AFTER I'm snuggled warmly under the covers.....
