Blumenthal, Paul and other idiots...POLITICS Thread

I'm against the government stating what is and is not a legal marriage. Personally I think it's up to a couple's/individual's church/faith to say what is and is not a marriage. The usual argument for government involvement is tax related. That's fine by me, but open it to all living situations; treat roommates the same as married couples, gay couples, or couples in a 'traditional' relationship. Let people file joint returns with anyone which they have lived with for 6 months or more.

It's obviously gonna be 5-4 once it gets to SCOTUS, and I kind of think Kennedy is going to uphold today's decision.

Agreed. I think he'll expand the liberty angle he used in Lawrence (invalidating sodomy-criminal laws), but which he hasn't really used since.

Just backing up: isn't it nuts that (eventually) one of the most famous rulings in SCOTUS history will be named after Arnold Schwarzenneger?

Just looking at your avatar, I'm thinking Ruben needs to make sure he's got his green card.

Why couldn't he be running against Al Green? Imagine the debates!

Didn't 2/3rds of the hispanic vote go Dem this year?

Its probably getting close to not being all that competitive.

Gore/Bush - 62/35
Kerry/Bush - 53/44
Obama/McCain - 67/31

Not really a trend, just a data point.

Yeah, I just don't think southern republicans stand much of a chance with hispanics the way things have been going.

Maybe someone from the same cloth as Christie could do well though with them though.

True, but McCain at that point was probably more Hispanic-friendly than any other Republican candidate would have been, and much more than anyone who's plausible right now as their 2012 nominee. This seems like a problem that will get worse for the Republicans.

McCain was good with Hispanics, but the year was bad for the GOP with poor people and new voters and the Dems running a brown person. It might get better, it probably won't get much worse than 30%, but that's abysmal/unsustainably bad if the GOP wants to be competitive nationally long term. That's why I was saying that's the thing I'm worried about, not Mississippi's state flag.

I know that some anti-immigrant conservatives argue that Bush's 44% is unreliable, and somehow draw from that premise the conclusion the Republican party shouldn't embrace Bush-style reform.
