Blumenthal, Paul and other idiots...POLITICS Thread

dajafi, how are they going to learn to be poor if there is some damn jobs program out there for them? The caste system needs continuous replenishment, that is why we are minting new needy from the middle class by limiting funds. I mean it is not like Robinhood is running the US, it is a two party system where the well healed vote to pay less taxes, as they manage to find ways to create oppression and disillusionment. It is really not race as much anymore as it is wealth, and that can become an amazing powder keg. Lets hope someone get a clue soon.

Eh, I'm not so much interested in making political hay with this stuff as I am a broader understanding that if you want people to work throughout their lives, and pay taxes and not require expenditures on social services and jails and shelters and all that, the two things you have to do are make sure they can get educated (to the extent that the public sector can play a role; it's always primarily about the parents on that one) and make sure they get early work experience.

The goal should be to get as many people as possible to a point where they can stand on their own two feet in the labor market. At that point, you need less of a safety net--and it really is a safety net, rather than an open-ended support.

We're giving relief to people that I deal with in my office every day now unfortunately. But because of the longevity of this recession, these are people — and they're not minorities and they're not defective and they're not all the things you'd like to insinuate that these programs are about — these are average, good American people.

Tom Kanjorski is sure to get some heat for that. Must be the Temple education.

So Byrd is in the hospital with a "serious illness." Sounds bleak for the old coot.

If a vacancy is named July 2 or earlier, there will be an election held this November.
If the seat is not declared vacant until July 3 or later, the governor's replacement serves until the end of the term on January 3, 2013.

The rule is the vacancy has to be declared 2 years and 6 months before the end of the term to necessitate a general election. I don't know if Manchin can drag his feet on declaring a vacancy if Byrd dies too soon.

I have a feeling that Byrd is going to die on the Fourth of July.

West Virginia law states that if there is a Senate vacancy more than two and a half years before the incumbent's term ends, a special election would be called for this November. That two and a half year mark is July 3 -- four days from now.

But, as the Post's Paul Kane notes, the language of the law is unclear as it sets up a schedule that would begin the special election process after the "primary next", meaning, according to Democrats, in the spring of 2012. Such a schedule would place the special election in November 2012 when Byrd's 9th term would have ended anyway.

West Virginia, you crazy bastards

I'm resigned to the fact that we're probably not getting a special election here, but I'm absolutely blown away at how poorly this law is written.

This is the problem with these guys hanging around too long. Shouldn't there be an age limit for senators, especially for a guy that was third in line for the presidency?

Has anyone ever been to WV? EVERYTHING is named after that dude. I went to buy a can of Coke and it was called Byrd-a-Cola.

I'm half listening to this questioning.

What a huge waste of time/ink/air time/pixels this whole exercise is.

Welcome to the real world. If you think that spying between super power nations is a was, then you need a new reality based on reality. Russia is less "dangerous" in the better dead then Red sense, and significantly more dangerous in the insane, random and ruthless xKGB dictator mode it currently is engaged in.

I expect that number to grow significantly. Military and industrial spying, no doubt. Too bad Obama just had burgers with the Russians to make nice.
