Is There A BETTER Day to Start the New Politics Thread?

She's got a good chance in that runoff. Some talk there's been Republican tampering, but I don't really buy it--too many contested Republican primaries for that to be a major factor.

#PA12 turnout: 81,000 Ds to 45,000 Rs. Still sizeable Dem crossover vote for Burns, but huge GOP surge just a myth

GOP turnout just didn't materialize. Won some Democrats, but not enough.

I bahaha'd at this live. Man Matthews worked himself into a righteous indignation over this.

NYT with an editorial today hitting Blumenthal. I don't know if he's going to make it to Friday.

How Rand Paul Became the Tea Party's Obama

The Son Also Rises

Two very good (though long) profiles on Rand Paul. His acceptance speech amused the hell out of me, so I went to read more. It seems he is about 10x the politician his father is, and has adroitly moved to address a number of the weaknesses Ron Paul has with some of his more unpopular views. I think I might like him.

Weird crop of GOPers we can elect this go around. Some legit, true believers who are harping fiscon bonafides but are very conservative socially and whatnot (Toomey, Paul (with some quirks), Rubio, and Coburn's up too). Then Kirk and Castle on the very moderate GOP edge of the spectrum, and with Blumenthal's implosion, either McMahon or Simmons will be a moderate with a chance of winning as well. Tom Campbell, the frontrunner for the GOP nod in CA who is polling even with Boxer, is pro choice/pro gay marriage.

Big tent, mother fuckers.

Specter carried 3 of 67 counties: Philadelphia, Dauphin (Harrisburg), and Lackawanna (Scranton).

To Arlen's credit, he has finally won a Democratic primary in Philadelphia.

For those disinclined to listen to the chowderhead Matthews blather on, he doesn't say, directly, whether he himself had served in Vietnam in his little screed here.

Pols have wrapped themselves in the flag since that serial battlefield loser Washington's day. Blumenthal, who's proving to be a startlingly inept candidate, did the equivalent of jacking off into it. That bad habit isn't the exclusive province of this particular candidate, and he won't be the last to evidence it.

So get the eff over it.

I don't have any rye in the house. The Eagle Bourbon is, I think, my favorite bourbon ever though. It is, apparently, a rye recipe, whatever that means.

I have no idea what it means either, but I like the sound of it, & would be perfectly willing to sample some.

Speaking of topics at the same time tangentially yet inextricably related to politics, how about this poetry-concocting head of the Social Security Administration?

One more quick note on Arkansas--if this really is an "anti-establishment" year and if Halter ends up winning a run-off, then I think he's got an outside chance of winning. Boozman is currently in the House of Representatives who did vote for TARP, and is not all that well known outside his district in the NW of the state. Halter has run as a kind of smart populist who led the effort to get a lottery established in Arkansas which will start paying for scholarships in the fall. Obama isn't popular in this state of course, but he backed Lincoln, so Halter doesn't have that baggage. From what I've heard, Halter is not well liked by the Democratic establishment in this state, but he'll presumably have outside money.

If, however, Lincoln wins the primary, she hasn't got a chance.

I watched that last night and was speechless. That guy could have been chairman of Paramount Pictures and I wouldn't have thought a female would be interested in him. Am I the only one surprised that her husband wasn't at least able to give the Congressman a black eye? Don't guys do that anymore?

Does being a pothole-fixer count for anything in senatorial campaigns? Because Blumenthal's fixed lots of them over the years that neither Simmons nor McMahon has had the chance to.

incidentally, McMahon is a "moderate" in the same way that the unkempt mumbling fellow on your streetcorner who has missed his last several years' worth of baths is "eccentric".

I know two things about Linda McMahon. Her husband does pro wrestling stuff and she wrote a $10,000 check to the DCCC a few years ago. Neither of those things make me too excited to see her in the US Senate.
