I guess we should expect nothing less from the guy who removed discrimination protections for gay state workers in Virginia. I wonder if the Itawamba secret prom was held in Richmond.

I'm really happy that as far as I can tell, no one in Arkansas knows or cares about this.

Basically, they said that it couldn't be tolled unless the money raised was used ONLY for that road. Dumb. I thought we were trying to funnel people AWAY from cars.

This society is built around cars. If you try to get people away from cars through the proliferation and raising of tolls the only two things that will happen is first you will piss off basically the entire population and then you will fail and be voted out of office.

Wouldn't tolling 1-80 fall more heavily on out of state drivers? I mean, no one lives in the part of PA where I-80s goes, it's for people going to and from NJ to Cleveland and points west?

For the angolophiles and poll-o-philes stateside, the guardian's handy guide to the essential numbers, interactive map and swingometer. Any similarity in manner between the guardian's poll expert and Ollie Reader is purely vocational.

For my part, I shall spend the next month hoping to be doorstepped by a politician (something that hasnae happened since I left dublin town) and praying for a hung parliament. If thems of you what think you know english politics want to be amused, don't forget to leaven the bread of daily political bollix with lashings of The Thick Of It.

Yeah I spent a lot of time yesterday dicking about on the Guardian and Times of London's websites. The three party swingometer thing was pretty cool at the Guardian. I liked this map from the Times that put Ladbroke's betting odds into a map.

I guess my one random question about UK politics is who is a stereotypical Liberal Democrat voter? It's easy enough to come up with generic versions of Labour and Tory supporters from afar, but who is the Lib Dem base? Is there one? There are some regions of the country, the Southwest for example, where it seems Labour might as well not exist, and it's basically a battle between the Lib Dems and Tories. Actually I guess after this election there will be just a handful of Labour MPs south of Birmingham outside of the City of London and its immediate environs in all of England.

If nothing else looking at these maps goes to show geographic partisan differences within a country is far from a US phenomenon.

In Britain, they're called Rotten Boroughs, in the US, they're called North Dakota, Delaware, Vermont, Wyoming, etc.

Oh, and to celebrate British democracy, I'm planning to re-read the Putney debates.

That explains all the giant confederate flags I saw while driving through rural VA and TN the past few days.

I read a few of the comments, and other than the perhaps somewhat unfortunate (and utterly misunderstood) angel and devil graphic, I don't know specifically what the people are objecting to. It looks like the person who made that little handout was influenced by Michael Oakeshott.

One of the more bizarre elements about Americans and their misuse of both terms is the relationship of markets to liberalism. A belief in the goodness of free markets more or less depends on the idea that people are basically good--that they won't do irrational things like use their market position to oppress people in unprofitable ways, like refuse to serve customers of a certain ethic group. Conservatives know better--people are stupid and irrational, and government, though not perfect (since perfection is found only in heaven, and is not for us in our fallen state) is necessary to limit the harm their stupidity and irrationality may do.

I actually like the emphasis on original sin--liberals think the stain can be erased in this life, conservatives do not. Everything else pretty much follows from that.
