Where the heck is the New POLITICS Thread?

No one in my neighborhood got a Census questionnaire. We're all assuming that our development (2007-2008) didn't exist in the database. Fifty or sixty families uncounted! I'd care if if the gerrymandering wasn't going to be strictly Democrat in nature.

It's way more than 50-60, more like 150-160.

Good. Rob Andrews can suck it.

There is no category specifically for mixed race or biracial.

That's odd, as you'd think such an option would yield more accuracy. Although I guess one can check multiple options (ie, "all that apply"), but you'd think they'd have a "multi" option by now.

VoxOrion wrote:Little blurb on economic numbers from Rea Hederman at Heritage Foundation via National Review

The March jobs report contained some of the good news that analysts have been waiting for. First, private hiring increased by 123,000 jobs, with every sector except financial and information adding jobs. Second, revisions to the employment reports of the previous months were revised upwards. Third, the unemployment rate remained flat at 9.7 percent, despite a tick up in the labor force. (Often, the unemployment rate increases as workers return to the labor force after the worst of a recession has passed. In this case, the labor force increased by 398,000, with most of the workers finding jobs, according to the household survey.) Fourth, both the household and establishment surveys are pointing in the same direction — showing job growth. Finally, hours worked continued its upward climb, matching this recovery’s January high.

There is some volatility to these numbers, as teenagers accounted for almost a third of new entrants into the labor force. The teenage unemployment rate sharply increased to 26.1 percent as many of the teenagers were unable to find work. But 325,000 adult men also entered or reentered the labor force, and enough of them found jobs to keep their unemployment rate at 10.0 percent. Overall, the labor force participation has climbed for four straight months but is still well below the pre-recession level.

So, the good news is that hiring has resumed and job growth should be consistent throughout the rest of the year. The bad news is that job growth is not yet robust enough to lower the unemployment rate. While hiring is likely to increase as the recovery strengthens, the labor-market recovery is going to be quite slow, especially as compared to some of the previous recessions. Part of the slack of the labor market is indicated by the fact that nominal earnings per hour actually fell in March. This slight dip is due in part to the new hires coming in at entry-level positions with commensurately lower pay. Long-term unemployment is going to remain a problem as the average duration of unemployment now exceeds 31 weeks, a new high.

Assuming I'm reading this correctly - the next "step" is to see new job creation outpace lost jobs.

No, the positive number means new jobs have exceeded lost jobs. What needs to happen is for new jobs to exceed the growth in the labor force, both from kids entering the labor force and discouraged workers returning to it. We are now at the time in the nascent recovery where discouraged workers will be rejoining the work force, that is starting to search for jobs again.

NJ militia purpose

my prof was talking about how all the militias are going to make an "armed march" on Washington DC, but since they won't be allowed in DC with guns they are going to a park in Northern Virginia instead. My prof wants the airforce to keep making low level passes just to make sure they know they are screwed if they get too riled up

So, has right wing paranoia really depressed census turnout in Republican areas? I find it hard to believe, really, but if it were true, it would be delicious.

What is Glenn Beck saying about the Census?

I don't know what Glenn Beck is saying, but when I was googling about why we wouldn't get a form, or where the address if came from, I found a bunch of messages from wackaloons calling it unconstitutional and the like.

Our form came today. Now I can be assured that they won't close the crappy local hospital and the 20 local library branches.

I didn't link the Think Progress piece in the first place because I didn't think it had any credibility.

And, I do hope someone points out to the wackaloons that in fact the Constitution requires a decennial census.

Have we ever had any kind of discussion on the "Fair Tax" here or is that more of an Economics Thread topic?

Oh boy, they decided to hold the prom!!!!
To avoid Constance McMillen bringing a female date to her prom, the teen was sent to a "fake prom" while the rest of her class partied at a secret location at an event organized by parents.

McMillen tells The Advocate that a parent-organized prom happened behind her back — she and her date were sent to a Friday night event at a country club in Fulton, Miss., that attracted only five other students. Her school principal and teachers served as chaperones, but clearly there wasn't much to keep an eye on.

"They had two proms and I was only invited to one of them," McMillen says. "The one that I went to had seven people there, and everyone went to the other one I wasn’t invited to."

Last week McMillen asked one of the students organizing the prom for details about the event, and was directed to the country club. "It hurts my feelings," McMillen says. Two students with learning difficulties were among the seven people at the country club event, McMillen recalls. "They had the time of their lives," McMillen says. "That's the one good thing that come out of this, [these kids] didn't have to worry about people making fun of them [at their prom]."

I think gay is a communicable disease, so these kids and parents certainly acted smart and swift!

Feds won't let PA put tolls up on I-80. They're going to have to rework the 2010-11 budget now, and Rendell's going to call a special session for transit funding. Basically, they said that it couldn't be tolled unless the money raised was used ONLY for that road. Dumb. I thought we were trying to funnel people AWAY from cars.

I really don't even know where to begin with this; just a sad, sad story. It is too bad Constance can't buy a full page ad in the local paper that says "Fuck You, Itawamba!" At least she can hold her head high and know that she took the high road while all the cave-dwelling people of Itawamba decided to get down and crawl through the mud.

No, he knows he's got us by the balls, so he'll make political hay by stoking anti-American feeling while ripping off enough graft to support his extended family for a millenium. He's smart, we're crazy.

So what are y'all doing to celebrate Confederacy History Month:

I guess we should expect nothing less from the guy who removed discrimination protections for gay state workers in Virginia. I wonder if the Itawamba secret prom was held in Richmond.
