Wait, so the Taliban are terrorists again? Does this mean we can keep trying to kill them in Afghanistan?

it's okay to admit you're embarrassed, too
Yes, but in a double utley you can put your utley on top they other guy's utley, and you're the winner. (Swish)

Democrats are tying this in with the Republican glee over the Olympics failure from last week, saying it's another example of the right rooting against America. I really just don't buy them as the same thing. The DNC's statement is maybe the most ridiculous example of it, but it seems like it's the message a lot of their elected officials and talking heads are going with too.

I don't see why as an American I am supposed to take great pride in the fact that an American won the Nobel Peace Prize, when the prize was given to Obama because he's not George Bush, who, last I checked, was American. I mean, good for Obama. I'm glad he's giving the money to charity. Peace in the Middle East and nuclear disarmament are nice goals. But the overriding reason for the prize being awarded is his not George Bushness, which I guess is fine. I don't make the rules. I just don't see why I'm supposed to be happy about a bunch of Norwegians taking a not so subtle swipe at one American president by applauding another.

Have you really met many/any democrats that ARE happy about this? I'll make you a deal, I'll yell at all the Democrats who woo-hoo this, and you yell at all the Republicans who make fun of him winning. My bet is that you'll be a LOT busier than I will be.

My reaction when he won it was that he didn't deserve it (YET). My 2nd reaction was that I wish he hadn't won it because now I'm going to hear all this crap from Republicans. I think I've been proven right.

I spent 15 minutes this morning writing a fake article that wasn't funny about Tom Brady winning the NFL MVP in week four. I am the Republicans making fun of him for winning the award.

I had assumed you lifted that from some other site. I gave you too much credit. So fine, don't be happy, but realize it is kind of odd for you to be denigrating him that much. I thought politics stopped at the water's edge or whatever. These colors don't run.

I'm not denigrating Obama specifically. He didn't ask to win it. I am making fun of his winning it, but mostly I'm pissed at the people telling me I'm supposed to be happy as an American for an award that essentially was given as a rebuke of the previous administration.

Have you decided what you're going to do about the swine flu vaccine yet? Have you heard anybody yet talk about it that you trust? Will you take your chances with the swine flu or the vaccine? Will you take the vaccine and give it to your children? How much do you trust your government?

However, one physician with whom we spoke, Dr. Marc Siegel put it this way, "The decision whether to make the vaccine for the novel H1N1 flu mandatory for health care workers is not a moral or ethical problem. It is simply a question of health mathematics. In this case, the math is on the side of the vaccine."

By the way, Dr. Siegel will be appearing later on this program, but I was bothered by the "simple math" part of that. I mean, I'm not a number. These people were not numbers. Those who are being forced to take the injection, it's not numbers. If they don't take their injections, they lose their jobs. It may or may not be a moral or ethical problem, but it certainly raises questions of freedom and liberty. Were their rights trampled?

We must take this threat seriously. I think the government has done a responsible job so far. However, the arrogance of those in science and politics that we have seen lately should give us pause. We are no longer living in the Dick Van Dyke-Mary Tyler Moore 1950s kind of mentality where people were better living through pharmaceuticals.

It's time now to know the facts and make your own decisions.

the concept of probability is beyond Beck's stunted intellectual capacity; rather than admit he doesn't understand what the doctor is saying, and ask for more information on "the simple math", he equates the doctor's remark with arrogance ("he's smarter than me, so I'll assume he's trying to put one over on me, & by extension my listeners")

There's a whole class of people--Joe Morgan, idiots who drive instead of fly out of fear, people who take out interest only mortgages, who simply lack basic numeracy. I for one am glad such people might not take the flu vaccine.

But there's also a really dangerous relativism going on here--science deniers often say things like "well there are two sides to everything." But in many cases, one side is wrong. This kind of logic lends credence to astrology and fortune tellers and prosperity gospel preachers. It's a denial of truth. Why not have a debate on whether you should wash your hands after you take a dump? Government is telling me that too.

I guess it remains to be seen what effect this has on the election but we probably all know where this thing is headed. In the meantime, I think I mentioned several pages back that I was going to attend an event in SJ featuring all three candidates; that event has been cancelled as the SJ Chamber of Commerce could not get a firm committment from the candidates to attend. I'm sure if the event were in Elizabeth or Lodi they would've hurried right over to speak with the electorate.

a victory for sanity:
Under a two-year-old agreement with the federal department of homeland security, Arpaio and his deputies had been authorised to enforce federal immigration law by arresting suspected illegal immigrants in the field and by checking the immigration status of people arrested on other offences.

But after drawing thousands of complaints and a civil rights investigation from the justice department, Arpaio was this week stripped of his federal authority to make immigration arrests. County attorney Andrew Thomas, one of Arpaio's supporters, condemned the "setback in the fight against illegal immigration".

Is it wrong for me to hope that Beck and Limbaugh fans really aren't going to get flu vaccines?

I love the last line in the article, where it criticizes the program for promoting racial profiling of hispanics among other things. I'm sorry, but I wouldn't expect the authorities to look for Norwegians crossing the Mexican border into Arizona to pick vegetables.

So is it too late for Daggett to raise a bunch of dough and win that NJ governor's race?

I think so, I wouldn't be surprised if it ends something like

Corzine 38-Christie 36-Daggett 25

I'll vote for whoever is ahead in the polls between Daggett and Christie before Election Day.

Before clicking the link, try to think who this might be.

The most persecuted person "in the entire history of the world".

Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has described himself as the most persecuted person "in the entire history of the world".

Mr Berlusconi also said he was "the best prime minister we can find today".

In an impassioned statement, he then mistakenly told reporters he had spent millions of euros on "judges", before correcting himself to say "lawyers".

Mr Berlusconi was speaking two days after Italy's top court lifted a law granting him immunity while in office.

Correspondents say the Constitutional Court's ruling means the 73-year-old billionaire will probably have to face a number of trials for corruption and bribery within months.

Maybe I missed this because I was out of town all weekend, but I just now saw (via an ad on Google Mail) that Obama endorsed Bill Thompson in the NYC mayoral race.

That he did this on Friday afternoon at the start of a holiday weekend--and that Gibbs, not Obama himself, made the statement--suggests just how tepid this endorsement is. I can't imagine it'll change anything.

Our first debate is tonight. With no baseball on, I'll probably watch.
