I'm guessing this is just the beginning.

Agreed, especially without knowing all the facts. Frankly, based on what I've heard, I think the officer handled himself exactly as he should have. It seems as though it was probably Gates who created the entire situation. I understand he was in his own house but the responding officer doesn't know that without ID. I don't know how far Gates went after ownership was established but it might be possible that the officer went a bit too far in actually arresting him.
It does go to show, however, that black president or not, this country will ALWAYS have some level of suspicion between races, IMHO.

The officer should have identified himself, when asked. A charge of creating a public disturbance inside your own house is thin.

I recently asked my friend’s little girl what she wanted to be when she grows up.
She said she wanted to be Prime Minister some day. Both of her parents, Labour supporters, were standing there, so I asked her, ‘If you were Prime Minister what would be the first thing you would do?’
She replied, ‘I’d give food and houses to all the homeless people.’
Her parents beamed.
‘Splendid: what a worthy goal.’ I told her ‘But you don’t have to wait until you’re Prime Minister to do that. You can come over to my house and mow the lawn, pull weeds, and sweep my yard, and I’ll pay you £50.
Then I’ll take you over to the supermarket where that homeless fellow hangs out, and you can give him the £50 to use toward food and a new house.’
She thought that over for a few seconds, then she looked me straight in the eye and asked:
‘Why doesn’t the homeless man come over and do the work, and you can just pay him the £50 ?’
I said, ‘Welcome to the Conservative Party.’
Her parents still aren’t speaking to me.
