never believe that anyone is "a lot smarter than you" about matters of economics.

never.

Physics, maybe. Economics? not ever.

Assumimg you were talking to a general "you", and not JH in particular....

my wife begs to differ.

Largest drop in Dow history

Today Capitol Hill and Wall Street are inextricably linked for history:

The Dow Jones dropped 777 points, the largest point drop in history, plunging dramatically after the House failed to pass bailout for the nation's financial system.

According to Bloomberg News, stocks lost $1.1 trillion in value, meaning the market loss was larger than the size of the $700 billion bailout.

while I'm fairly sure you'll protest that this particular quote you've picked out does not reflect your thinking on the matter: "shucks, folks, I just cut & paste totally at random; coulda come from the Onion, for all I know " -this provides a fine example of what I was alluding to in my advice to you concerning economics wisdom

loller catz
Minority Whip Roy Blunt (R., Mo.) said he had 12 Republicans who would have voted for the bill but changed their minds, while Rep. Eric Cantor (R., Va.) holding up a copy of what he said was Pelosi’s floor remarks - said the speaker “frankly struck the tone of partisanship.” A senior aide to Pelosi rejected the Republican claims against the speaker, saying the suggestion that her speech motivated House Republicans to vote against the bailout plan was “absurd.”

“You don’t vote on the speech, you vote on the bill,” said the aide.

Frank, speaking at a press conference, mocked the suggestion. “Give me those twelve people’s names and I will talk uncharacteristically nicely to them,” Frank said.

So you fight what you felt was partisanship with more partisanship? LOL THIS IS WHY WE RULE

Earlier someone commented that economics wasn't ideological. I almost replied that economics is practically a core (the core in many cases i.e. Marxism) element of ideology but I thought someone would get mad at me for saying so.

So, today, Ms Palin got televised endorsements from mom and dad and Mr McCain, who are all just "so proud" of what she is doing. This, of course, in the midst of the rest of the national media collectively saying, "yeah, you know what...no" to her, eh, candidacy.

In all seriousness, I think there are people who respond oppositely to the media just because. It's like they get defensive for the candidate or something. Not to Palin proportions, but it's not like the national media said yes to Bush either time (hell, Bush had a $100+ million grossing documentary in theaters working against him the second time). The Michael Moore flick probably ginned up the against base more in reaction than it did for its target audience.

The fact that stuff is scarce means people are forever jockeying for position to get the pieces they're 'entitled' to. We resort to gang activity when what we want is more than any individual can hold alone. Some in the gang have more to gain (or at least feel they do) than others, so persuading - self and others - of the desirability of the stuff wanted, and of the merits of the gang itself, to get/keep it, becomes an incessant human activity.

Everything else pretty much flows from these basic realities.

Donald Trump was on Fox News earlier saying that oil would drop to 20-30 a barrel if there was no bailout package.

Watching Cramer re-run now. He's almost in tears.

Wachovia closed at 1.90 today.

CEO was on the show 2 weeks ago and outlined his entire plan illustrating how safe the company was.

Wachovia was trading at 19.37 on 9/8/08

30.60 on 5/2/08

38.09 on 2/1/08

44.28 on 11/14/07

50.64 on 9/28/07

incredible.
