Of course. The teachers' unions have been a Republican villain of choice at least since '96.

(FWIW, I think they have at least something of a point here. And there were a few speeches at the DNC--not necessarily on-camera--that also took the teachers' unions to task. The one time I remember yelling at my TV during last week's convention was when they showed the NYC union head, someone I know very slightly and really dislike based on how she's run her union.)

I think there was a clear racial subtext to the community organizing attacks. It's something that even in their worst moments, Bush/Rove never really did, at least not in such a blatant way.

And that's why if I'm Obama I counter with the fact that in small heartland towns, we may not call them community organizers, but they do many of the same things--soup kitches, drug treatment, and so forth. And without them, many small towns would simply collapse.

Yeah, I have a feeling that the whole blasting of community organizers might actually be one of the biggest takeaways from last night's speeches, because everything else we'd pretty much heard from the McCain camp before. If you don't bring much new to the table, the media is going to pick up on whatever is novel because at least they haven't talked about it before, and in this case they've caused a fair bit of outrage. And looking at those comments, out of context, makes them look pretty insensitive/ignorant from the RNC speakers. There are a lot of people who are community organizers working hard to help people, and that seems like a really dumb group of people to piss because of just how many people either are doing that or are being helped by those people.

If you haven't had a chance to look at his work, it's a pretty interesting blog.

Given that Nate Silver is smart and his methods are surely grounded in strong maths, I'm feeling better to see his projections showing Obama with a solid victory at the moment.

Right, and many Democrats this week have been referring to her as the former mayor of a town with less than 9,000 people, and basically ignoring the fact that she's the sitting governor of a state, and making sure to emphasize the smallness of the place to be derisive and show that she doesn't have any meaningful experience. So she takes a point that Obama has been holding up repeatedly in ads and speeches, and mocks it some, like she's been mocked all week, but also uses it as a comparison point to make herself look better. Actual responsibilities like passing a budget, making governing decisions, etc.

But I don't want to distract you all from your latest hobby horse you have climbed up on. Clearly this will be the gaffe that costs the Republicans the election, since it turns out her speech last night wasn't the worst thing that has ever happened in American political history.

There is a difference. Calling a town small is not an insult, its a fact. Claiming that you either don't know what a community organizer is or don't feel they have any real responsibilities is a different matter.

Like I said before, I think the experience argument is overrated right now. I just don't think it was smart to give dems something to work with. At most, the Dems might have pissed off the 9,000 people in Wasilla who were voting the other way anyways.

The first debate can't get here soon enough. I am tired of speeches and campaign ads already.

Right, it is a small town, but repeating that ad nauseam, and minimizing the fact that she is currently the governor of Alaska is intended to be insulting. To pretend otherwise is absurd. This was the Obama campaign's statement on McCain picking Palin: "Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies -- that's not the change we need, it's just more of the same," said Bill Burton, Obama Campaign Spokesman.

Yes. Multiple times. During Rudy's speech and Palin's speech.

well as long as the thread title calls for it...
http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2008/ ... 516/586295

that's a friggin hilarious daily show clip right there. if you don't want to bother watching, i'll summarize.

in the first clip, Karl Rove basically says that Palin is a good choice in part because she was the mayor of "the 2nd largest city in Alaska" (which Wasila actually isn't). As we've all discussed, Wasila has ~9000 people (and about half of that when Palin was in charge).

in the second clip, Karl Rove criticizes Tim Kaine (in an interview from last month), saying he wasn't a good VP option because:
he's only been a governor for 3 years
he was the mayor of the 105th biggest city in america (Richmond, population 200000)

Rove says that if Kaine was picked, it would be an "intensely political choice" and it wouldn't be because Obama was "first and foremost concerned that [kaine] is capable of being president of the united states."

Rove also said that McCain picking Palin was a campaigning decision and not a governing decision.
