I think this would be a mistake for McCain, as Romney's particularly egregious flip-flopping tarnishes McCain's straight-talk brand. (The brand is BS, but his media fan club will never tell...) Huckabee's line about The Mittster from the primaries--"people don't want to vote for someone who reminds them of their boss"--would seem to retain some relevance. I don't think his religion is an issue for most Republicans. It wasn't in the primary. The people who might hold it against him voted for him in swing states. It might be a problem in the south, but those people already aren't excited by McCain. He won't help, but probably won't hurt. Do you really think that independents will be discouraged about McCain because Romney is a Mormon?

Romney reminding people of the boss should help McCain with fiscal conservatives. A lot of Republicans dislike McCain's stance on immigration. They might think that having Romney's voice in the room would temper McCain's guest worker ideas.

Romney doesn't address McCain's biggest need, IMO. He's going to win if he can increase his share of independents, not by going after the "base." Going after the "base" could hurt him with independents. Going after independents won't make the "base" any angrier than they are now.

Republicans are attacking Obama on MTV in hopes of depressing the historic youth enthusiasm we're seeing and feeling this year. Can you help us fight back—without sinking to their level—by chipping in to air this funny, hopeful ad?

I think the General Betray Us ad was probably the first clue.

But this is really one of the worst ads I've ever seen. Quite possibly the worst TV spot I've seen produced by either a party committee or respected third party organization.

Hmm, I first saw that months ago - and I love it.

Just because our small conservative minority on this board hates that ad doesn't mean it's bad. I laughed the first time I saw it and I think anyone who hates/detests/fears Bush/Cheney will get the "for eight years it was gone" reference right away.

Why is this ad suddenly newsworthy now, though. Seriously, it's been on YouTube and God knows where else for about three months.

I can honestly say that if I was a Democrat and and that was a Republican ad I would still say that it was one of the dumbest ads I've ever seen.

Most Presidential ads are pretty dumb, including McCain's but that just is a big "WHAT THE HELL?".

edit: the ad really does suck. I guess it's possible that "people like us"--people who at least follow this stuff closely enough to argue about it on a baseball off-day--might have a different reaction than those to whom it's targeted. Maybe the failure of imagination is mine, though, because I have no friggin' idea what sort of group would respond well to that steaming pile.
