so just continuing on that whole nuclear thing . . . its funny, back in the 80s, we were told nuclear power was bad for when it melted down. when the nuclear industry rode in on its comparitively carbon nuetral charger to the UK energy market just recently, the question most raised was rather -
a)how long to get them built
b)the cost of subsequently shutting them down once they've gone past their sell by date

vs the energy that they supply. Plus, you know, nuclear waste doesn't go away quickly.

Anyhow, given the nature of large construction projects, in the face of a fairly time-critical need for energy of a less carbonating nature, I for one remain suspicious of an industry which says 'yeah,no bother, we can bang one out in 10 years'. As part of a spectrum of options, I'm less sceptical, but they are not an entire solution.

do I think either of your candidates would be more susceptible to the reasoning of the nuclear industry? I don't think so. I'd just want to know how strong their commitment is to other solutions to the energy crisis.

John McCain has been accused of flip-flopping. While I think most of it is a brilliant Democratic marketing campaign to simplify a candidate with a complicated record, Senator McCain needs to explain how he could consider a windfall profits tax one month and then criticize Senator Obama for doing so the next month. A candidate must be challenged especially when he runs on authenticity. People should keep pressing him to clarify where he stands and why his position may have changed.

Unfortunately, there won't be the same call for Senator Obama. What he did today was so distrubing that he irked Russ Feingold, a fervent supporter. I have no problem with him opting out of Federal financing if he hadn't been calling for Senator McCain to stay in Federal financing with him once a month. That wouldn't be that big a deal if Obama were just honest about why he was opting out. If he just said, "I'll make the best President and this gives me the best chance to win" he might be going back on his reformer image but at least he'd get kudos for honesty.

Instead he says, McCain is "not going to stop the smears and attacks from his allies running so-called 527 groups, who will spend millions and millions of dollars in unlimited donation." There have been no Republican groups running smears and attacks on him and there doesn't appear to be any on the horizon. The 527s hate McCain and would like nothing better than to see him lose. They know that he'll try to pass legislation to put them out of business. The only 527 out there, Moveon.org, is making "smears and attacks" on McCain. I'm sure Obama figures that he can make McCain look bad for being behind non-existent smears while he bears no responsibility for Democratic 527s. I think Republican 527s would rather run ads in favor of Obama. At least then they could stay in business and make smears in favor of candidates they actually like.

talk about hyperbole...'so disturbing'

lol

so the guy who raised a ton of money he had no idea he was going to raise isn't interested in giving it all back and limiting himself for a big general election with lots of costs....the same damn thing mccain did when he opted out of public financing (after getting a private loan due to said public financing). this is called politics sir. end of story.

if you don't think a ton of 527s are going to smear obama (and aren't frothing at the mouth right now in anticipation)...I just don't know about you and where you are coming from. and that's my piece on it, so don't bother getting me to respond again.

i'm watching fox news right now, and the host is shitting all over gas to electric conversion kits for cars.

for jingoist greedmongers, i'd hope that at some point they'd realize that a lot of the appeal of converting your engine isn't just to save money on using gas, but it's mostly to keep the majority of the money you spend on daily upkeep inside the country, instead of sending it overseas to fund god knows what, god knows where.
if you don't know what the wrestlers are trying to do--how certain moves and holds are supposed to work and so forth, then it might just look like too sweaty guys rolling around on a mat.

Oh. I'm replying to a Steagles post. Um. OK.

Ghosts in the GOP Attack Machine

We don't have a ton of 527s. I'm sure something will pop up, but it probably won't be too substantial. We're going to get majorly outspent on the 527 front, just like we did in 2004. It makes for a nice line in his reasoning for opting out though. Makes you all feel better about Obama going back on his previous position, even though it's complete crap.

I don't know the issue you guys are talking about and I don't know what a 527 is...

But I love that we've reached the point in America where no politician is allowed to change their mind or stance on anything without getting smashed by the other side. FLIP FLOPPERS!!!!!!

proof?

No Republican 527 has purchased TV time. When Moveon.org or the Teamsters union decided to go after McCain they announced on the web and in press releases. There could be a 527 which starts tomorrow that smears Barack Obama, but none exists today. Since the 527s despise John McCain it seems unlikely that someone would form a 527 to help him. Barack Obama is one of the people in America who is already aware that the 527s are out there smearing him.

[McCain is] not going to stop the smears and attacks from his allies running so-called 527 groups, who will spend millions and millions of dollars in unlimited donations.

What groups? He's the only one with a 527 now? Does he think Moveon.org is a Republican group?

so the guy who raised a ton of money he had no idea he was going to raise isn't interested in giving it all back and limiting himself for a big general election with lots of costs....the same damn thing mccain did when he opted out of public financing (after getting a private loan due to said public financing).

In a February 26 debate in Cleveland after he'd raised over twice what John McCain raised he said:

I will sit down with John McCain and make sure that we have a system that works for everybody

He repeated this in an April 27 interview with Fox News. If he didn't know he raised all this money, as you say, he's the only one in America. I don't think he has that little grasp of reality. John McCain never opted out of public financing for the general election. In fact it's likely he will still use public financing even though Obama will outspend him by three or four times.

this is called politics sir. end of story.

You are 100% right. It's the same old same old politics that have existed for years and years. I may not like it, but I understand it. My problem is that Barack Obama says that he isn't doing the same old politics and then does them. If Obama were just honest and told the truth it wouldn't be a big deal.

f you don't think a ton of 527s are going to smear obama (and aren't frothing at the mouth right now in anticipation)...I just don't know about you and where you are coming from. and that's my piece on it, so don't bother getting me to respond again.

Please find me these 527 that are set to smear Obama. You're asking me to prove some group that doesn't exist doesn't actually exist. That you believe they do doesn't mean they do. Telling me I'm delusional doesn't make them exist.

But I love that we've reached the point in America where no politician is allowed to change their mind or stance on anything without getting smashed by the other side. FLIP FLOPPERS!!!!!!

If Barack Obama weren't out there every day calling McCain a flip flopper it wouldn't be a big deal. The Obama message after "hope" and "change" is that McCain is a flip flopper and that he has changed his positions since 2000. So if Obama changes a position he has been publicly harping for a year and a half isn't he a hypocrite for using that message? While Hillary Clinton didn't discuss using the Federal system, using it has been a big centerpiece of Obama's message. He keeps saying private contributions are the way that large groups influence the election instead of real Americans.
