I'd feel worse if I had any idea what "teh suxxors" meant. Is that Latin?

Not surprising
That clown has been complaining about Obama frequently. If you think he's annoying talking sports (some of which I don't find too bad, as long as it's not baseball) he's TERRIBLE with politics. He's just like anyone else on the actual politics shows, takes one quote out of context and runs with it. Then if any caller points out he's wrong, he pretends he's actually arguing something else.

Stolen from a U of GA econ professor. Would have put this in the tax return thread, but don't want to turn it political.

The Bush tax cuts for the rich explained over beer...

Suppose that every day, ten men go out for beer and the bill for all ten comes to $100. If they paid their bill the way we pay our taxes, it would go something like this:

The first four men (the poorest) would pay nothing.
The fifth would pay $1.
The sixth would pay $3.
The seventh would pay $7.
The eighth would pay $12.
The ninth would pay $18.
The tenth man (the richest) would pay $59.
So, that’s what they decided to do. The ten men drank in the bar every day and seemed quite happy with the arrangement, until one day, the owner threw them a curve. ‘Since you are all such good customers, he said, ‘I’m going to reduce the cost of your daily beer by $20. Drinks for the ten now cost just $80.

The group still wanted to pay their bill the way we pay our taxes so the first four men were unaffected. They would still drink for free. But what about the other six men - the paying customers? How could they divide the $20 windfall so that everyone would get his ‘fair share?’ They realized that $20 divided by six is $3.33. But if they subtracted that from everybody’s share, then the fifth man and the sixth man would each end up being paid to drink his beer. So, the bar owner suggested that it would be fair to reduce each man’s bill by roughly the same amount, and he proceeded to work out the amounts each should pay.

And so:

The fifth man, like the first four, now paid nothing (100% savings).
The sixth now paid $2 instead of $3 (33%savings).
The seventh now pay $5 instead of $7 (28%savings).
The eighth now paid $9 instead of $12 (25% savings).
The ninth now paid $14 instead of $18 (22% savings).
The tenth now paid $49 instead of $59 (16% savings).
Each of the six was better off than before. And the first four continued to drink for free. But once outside the restaurant, the men began to compare their savings.

‘I only got a dollar out of the $20,’declared the sixth man. He pointed to the tenth man,’ but he got $10!’

‘Yeah, that’s right,’ exclaimed the fifth man. ‘I only saved a dollar, too. It’s unfair that he got ten times more than I!’

‘That’s true!!’ shouted the seventh man. ‘Why should he get $10 back when I got only two? The wealthy get all the breaks!’

‘Wait a minute,’ yelled the first four men in unison. ‘We didn’t get anything at all. The system exploits the poor!’

The nine men surrounded the tenth and beat him up.

The next night the tenth man didn’t show up for drinks, so the nine sat down and had beers without him. But when it came time to pay the bill, they discovered something important. They didn’t have enough money between all of them for even half of the bill!

And that, boys and girls, journalists and college professors, is how our tax system works. The people who pay the highest taxes get the most benefit from a tax reduction. Tax them too much, attack them for being wealthy, and they just may not show up anymore. In fact, they might start drinking overseas where the atmosphere is somewhat friendlier.

the end should be changed to the 10th guy skipping out on his part of the bill by hiding his assets in the Cayman Islands.... then it might be a good analogy to the Bush tax cuts.

A bit oversimplified and I don't accept your contention about the rich guy not showing up. How much is enough?

Let's say the rich man is worth 150million dollars, if he is taxed and had to pay a few million a year, he still has more resources than one person could ever need in terms of food, housing, healthcare and most gadgets and doesn't have to work, he can get massaged and bjs all day long every day if he likes.

The guy making 15K or 50K a year who is paying a lot to taxes, much to fund a bogus invasion/occupation -- can't afford lots of basics and has no future security.

The system is distorted, there shouldn't be people so wealthy that the wealth tranlsates to power -- ala monarchs in olden times.

Secondly, Corporation exist at the pleasure of our society. They don't have any inalienable rights -- (see the movie The Corporation for some shocking notions about that though...) And with Exxon/Mobil having record profits, gas over $4 in SF, and millions of people below the poverty lines and McCain talking abotu cutting more programs and taxes for the corporataions and wealthy -- this is a mid-direction to me.

What kind of society and ultimately world, do we want to live in? One that is priveleged for a relative few while most others toil and suffer, or one that meets at least the basic needs of the majority even if there are still some who have more and live better?

That thing has been floating around the internet since 2001 when the tax cuts were first put in place.

I had seen it before, but I saw it again yesterday. And considering I put my $430 check in the mail yesterday, it seemed relevant, sort of.

And PtK, I don't really accept that people will leave either, I mostly put it up for the bill paying aspect.

Though he ran one of the nation's poorest cities, James made more than $200,000 a year as mayor, more than any other mayor or even governor.

Seriously, quite a piece of garbage. That $200,000 figure didn't even include his salary as state senator, either. Did you see the video on the first page of this thread of James getting crapped on by a bird?

What this leaves out are state and local taxes. Over the last 30 years, the federal government has shifted responsibility to state and local governments, which do not have the ability to deficit spend. In general, state and local taxes are not nearly as progressive as the federal code--typically relying heavily on sales and property taxes. Secondly, by making them deductible, you allow more affluent taxpayers to limit their cost.

I think that Dem fight is using up precious time and resources that should be spent building traction against McCain. Two Dems taking jabs at each other helps the other side. Egos and powerful agendas are in place. Clinton didn't think anyone could outlast her -- and she's unwilling to let go til the bitter bitter end... she could still pull it out I guess. I just wonder if there will be anything left, and I see McCain who I think is an utter jack-a -- actually gaining momentum. He's not very likable and not very bright or articulate but he's playing the touhg guy card -- and the machine is behind him now... and I think he's the favorite.

Given the cheating I expect to take place, a Dem cannot win a close one, they'd have to win by 7-12% to offset the cheat factor. By cheat I mean anything from bogus voter rolls that don't have registered peopel on them, to logistical stuff that disenfranchises, to rigged Diebold and other machines...

It's amazing that we were discussing the chances for revolution, and we can't even get a natioanl standard and uniformity to voting in national elections!

I thought this would hurt the Dems as well. But seriously, no one has been talking about McCain. He's been an afterthought for awhile now. The entire country has been focused on Clinton/Obama. The media doesn't spend nearly as much time with McCain as they do with the Dems. I think the extra exposure may turn out to help them, except for the fact that they're wasting money.
