"I tell all kids not to use that word. If they're 29 and they win the World Series, I think they can say that.
But I definitely would say to all the kids out there, 'Kids, it's a bad word. Don't say it. And I'm dead serious.' "

Don't believe it. There's been no net job loss in Information Technology and the jobs that are left here pay better. The fact that you'll have a degree and presumably some kind of work ethic will doubly protect you from spending time unemployed.

However, I'd still avoid IT, the industry is stabilizing, the pay will flatten out, and it won't be anything hot, exciting, or exceptional. Just a job.

Update??

I ended up making my move, but it came out nothing like I had envisioned it. It was awkward, and I'm pretty certain I've thrown her for a loop. Things are now very much up in the air, but that's neither bad nor good. She seemed very receptive to spending more time together. I was deliberately casual about it and mindful to tell her I didn't want to put any pressure on her. These next couple days will be very telling, I think. Either way, I'm glad I did it.

I suddenly feel very creepy, like I'm reading someone's private diary.

I'm sorry. I'm also sure you'll get over it very soon.

So she called me tonight to tell me she's not ready to get into a relationship right now, which I'm okay with because she's still very cool with remaining good friends and we ended up having a great conversation.

A great conversation which included me telling her about the awesome news I received today. We finally heard back from the publisher that has had our manuscript for seemingly forever. Five and a half months after telling us they want to agree on some changes, they've finally told us what changes they want to make. They're pretty significant, but it's more about restructuring than it is about rewriting anything which pleases me immensely. So now we've again got some serious work to do, but we can finally say that we're officially working with a publisher on this book and there doesn't appear to be any obstacles that will keep us from seeing our goal of having it published. The minor setback with the ladyfriend does nothing to bring me down today.

Way to go, Drugs.

On another note

What the hell is the deal with second winds? How does it work that I don't get a lick of sleep - well, about a half hour/hour but I think I would have been better off staying up - such that I'm a complete zombie all morning at work, then just a dull headache and delirium in the afternoon, and now I feel pretty much just like I normally would around 10 o clock at night?

If no one's going to post on a Tuesday morning, I'm going to talk about chicks, and as far as I'm concerned, y'all deserve it.

After a great conversation (begun by her, mind you) at the bus stop on Thursday, I was sure that Prospect #1 would be at said bus stop the next day. Friday, nothing. Monday, nothing. Tuesday, nothing! WTF, man!

I found out Prospect #2 just graduated from college in 2007 which is kind of a downer, for two reasons. First, it's probably irrational, but I feel like being a few years older there's this expectation that you'll know the city like the back of your hand, have a billion date ideas and a wide circle of fabulous friends. I don't. Secondly, I feel like once you're 25 or so, you've probably got an awfully painful post-college relationship under your belt that one or both of you ruined because you wanted to toss it around like a rosin bag and are now ready to apply those lessons to the next one and make it work for more than three months. At 22 years old, I don't know. Being someone else's post-college fling is scary. That said, she's cute as a button - if you don't hail from the land of the rising sun, short brunette with curly hair is the way to go - and I want to see if I can work it out, but it's going to take forever. She works at the same institution (though not the same building) so there's no going out on a limb and asking her out, pretty much will have to flirt for a while and try to casually insinuate a meet up over drinks. Going to be a challenge.

Regrets....I've had a few....but then again...this one I'll mention....

If I had it to do over again, one thing I'd definitely change is I'd do a lot less thinking it situations like this and more going for it.

It's actually one of my biggest regrets. FWIW.

I've gotten a lot better at going for it since college. I get numbers at bars and other gatherings and actually call them if I still like them in the morning; at the end of a date that went well, I'm leaning in, no problem. If Bus Stop Girl ever shows up, she is getting asked out, I assure you.

Work, though, is a different story. If I go for it right away and weird this girl out, that's one weirded out girl coming to see me every time they need to pick up some books. It's also five other assistants/interns in her department whispering about me. It would probably go beyond that; if it gets to the Visitor's Services girls, that would be a disaster. If it gets to my ex-girlfriend that I struck out with the new assistant (which it probably would), that would be muy embarrassing. Basically, failure here would be a pretty big deal, and probably ruin my chances of hitting on future museum employees. I'm going to work this, but I'm going to have to be subtle.

It's a lie. Bernard Law is still a cardinal and living in the Vatican. He may or may not be a rapist himself, but he's responsible for a heck of a lot of pain inflicted upon kids.
