Has the Republican party ever had a non-WASP male presidential nominee? I know they've had a couple of Quakers (are Quakers considered protestant?), and have never had a Catholic prez nominee. Not trying to make a point... just wondering.
Not that I know of, although smitty says Goldwater wasn't a WASP. I have trouble considering Catholic a minority, but I don't think I'd argue too hard for my opinion. When I think minority in the context of lethal's original question, I think more along the lines of an ethnicity that one can't change or conceal. With that said (and why I wouldn't argue too hard), a lot of people believe that their religious status (being born Catholic, Muslim, even Jewish) is also not something they can change.
It's still a gray area, because obviously millions of Catholics choose to stay Catholics, while many (millions?) of Catholics change their mind and become Protestant (and vice versa).
