Its less of my feeling on him as a player, and more that I doubt he is the future. He is exciting, often by his own making. It is admirable that he worked hard to go from a AA second baseman to a starting center fielder. The contract is extremely favorable, aside from whatever the NTC is, and if he performs the team should win in this gambit by getting some other future parts around the 2018 season. So I am not against him, or the deal, but I am not a long term believer that he, himself, is an answer to the future.

(a) did you guys click on the link to the fangraphs article. it points out that odubel's first two years have been equal to or better than eaton's, with odubel doing it at a younger age.
(b) did you recall the trade price just paid for eaton and his very similar contract, a year or two after his extension?
(c) did you notice that after his midseason slump, odubel returned to being a top 15 mlb outfielder (8th most valuable cf) in september/october.
(d) have you noticed that he and eaton are projected by steamer (best system 2 years running) to be just one tenth of a win less valuable than eaton and more valuable than pence, fowler, span, and jdmartinez in 2017?

these three things suggest to me that his value is more likely to go up than down over the next year or two. y'all must really, really hate bat flips and mediocre fielding.

I hate bat flips and bad fielding, but I like him anyway.

Anybody see the exchange between Barkann and Salisbury last night on CSN? I know those guys just say stuff to say it but it struck me as odd. Barkann says "what does this say to Roman Quinn, to Nick Williams and to Mickey Moniak????" Salisbury said a couple things which were good but I thought the best was..."Odubel already is what you hope those guys become....also 3 guys get to play in the outfield"

Anyway, I think this deal is fantastic and look forward to continued development from him.

wow. that's gold-medal innanity from barkann, and the 3 guys needed for outfield comeback is a gold medal take down.

we should all hope and pray that enough out of the set altherr, quinn, tocci, cozens, williams, moniak, randolf, and pullin develop completely and quickly enough to create a legitimate logjam in the outfield. i am really positive about almost all of those guys... but as of now, none of them has proven anything above aa outside of some small sample success by altherr and quinn. you need an unusally good 50-50 success rate to give you even a full 5 man outfield!
